I would just love to have all the cards that I had as a youth in the late 60's, early 70's :irked:! Alot of them were put in the spokes of bicycle wheels to make that "motor" sound like it was a motorcycle :scared:

I can't even remember all of the good ones that I had, I know that had a collection of the Reds and the ones that eventually were the BRM! Rose (tons of Rose cards), Perez, Bench, Sparky, Concepcion and plenty more like T, Helms, L. May G. Nolan, C. Carroll, Eastwick, etc, etc.. along with others stars from that era and before like Hank Aaron, Willie Stargell, Al Oliver, Ron Santo and others.

Oh well...... sorry if this is off topic and the question. I had to ramble on again and remembering some good times of my youth.

To me, a lot of the fun in collecting was looking them up in a Beckett. Of course, my son and I did this when he was young. He is 23 now. I have a huge collection accumulated since I was a boy. They are all in top loaders if they were in the $5 to $25 range. Any worth more are in hard plastic screw downs. If you have some nice ones, you should invest in hard plastic for them. Just off the top of my head, I have a slew of Griffey rookies and bunches of other baseball cards that I got just because they were high value. In football, I have 2 Payton rookies, Montana rookie, 2 Rice rookies , 2 Aikmen rookies, O.J. rookie, Butkus rookie, 2 Payton 2cd year, Fran Tarkenton rookie, 4 or 5 Lawrence Taylor rookies, several Emmit Smith and Barry Sanders rookies, Bart Starr rookie, Johnny U rookie, and many, many others(Im tired of typing). In basketball, I have scads of Kobe and Shack rookies, Bird and Magic rookie, Wilt 2cd year, Lew Alcinder rookie, and many others to numerous to mention. I even have a Jordan rookie(yes the one with 3 players on it) but it isnt in the best of shape. I got it for 50 cents at a yard sale. I have a large number of the "insert" cards that became popular during the early 1990's. This was the start of the card collecting decline. The card companies like Topps, Upper Deck, etc simply over saturated the market with every kind of "insert" cards imaginable. The money is in old Topps regular issue cards. When I was a boy, I simply ordered a complete Topps set in football every year. Those sets in 70's and 80's cost very little and a means I always had Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, and Roger Staubach rookies. In closing this long post, I would advise investing in a Beckett and looking them up. The cards are numbered on the back and it really doesnt take that long.

I left out my prized cards. I have a Gale Sayers rookie and a Brian Piccolo rookie. Needless to say, I keep all my hard plastic screw downs in the gun safe!:thumb:

How do I even begin to know which ones might be more valuable? Just the bigger name players?

 

As you know some players cards are more valuable than others. However, the card's value increases or decreases based on it's condition. As others mentioned, it would be wise of you to sort through them and see what you actually have that may be of any value. There are many different ways to price a cards value. Condition, player, year, and is the card graded or ungraded play a role in the price.

There is a guy in Greenup County that has one of the largest memorabilia collections anywhere. His name is John Carpenter. If I find a contact for you I will let you know.

One more quick story and I will be quiet for a while. My son was very young and Shack was his favorite player. There was an insert set called "Revolution" put out by one of the companies. A friend of mine gave me a Shack Revolution card because he knew my son liked him(it listed for $190 back then but, like most inserts, has went down tremedously). I kept teasing my son saying the Shack card was mine and he would have to get his own. We were at the store and there was 3 packs of this brand of card on the shelf. They were like $1.50 each so I bought them. While walking to the parkong lot, my son asked if there was a Shack Revolution card in the packs, could he have it. The chances of getting ANY Revolution card was like 1 in every 300 packs and the odds of it being a Shack would have been astronomical. We got in the car and the first pack he opened had a Shack card. I will never forget the look of joy on his face. To me, thats the kind of thing sports card collecting is all about!

I am looking at a Dave Winfield Rookie card here it has to be worth something.

 

That Dave Winfield card is going for $275 on Ebay 98.

Thats a PSA graded 9 card. And it has no bids.

 

Theres one below it that is probably more like yours going for $1.97 asnd it has 2 bids. If all it has after a few days is $2 it isn't wrth much.

Card collecting has been screwed up by the "graded" cards. You might have perfect looking cards that you could've made money on back in the day, but now a grader would make it a 7, 8, or 9 and you wouldn't get jack for it. I used to love collecting cards, but now it just plain sucks. I have thousands and tens of thousands of cards, but I just keep them for my son one day because I can't make any real money on them.

Its easy to collect now. Just join etopps. You dont have to have the card take up any space at your house.

HT, I'm in the same boat as you. I have thousands of cards and the 10 that might be worth 30-50 buvks are not worth going through them all to find.

 

Fact of the matter is they're just not worth much.

 

Without going through them no one is going to give you even $100. That's just the way it is right now.

You are right they are very rare, but if you didn't know a lot about cards and you were just one of those people that bought cards ever now and then to try to get a Griffey or a Bonds you just might be one of the lucky ones that had an insert card. And you are right no one is going to give you much without knowing what is in them. I wouldn't suggest anyone sell 700 cards without going through them.
