I can understand why the casual observer may make the assumption that HHS has had some difficulties with top-tier teams under the current coach. Prior to Coach Mueller coming to HHS, the 'Birds rarely played Ohio teams. Since arriving, Mueller likes to schedule a game against one of the Ohio powers every year (with a few exceptions). Usually, the game HHS plays against these Ohio teams is in a big venue (like in PBS as part of the i-Wireless Fox 19 Classic or in the Herbie) which really attracts the attention. Prior to this past year HHS under Coach Mueller had not beaten one of these Ohio teams, although there were certainly some very close tries! I think all of this added up to the notion that HHS under Mueller couldn't win the games against top-tier (Ohio) competition.

 

With how HHS did against a very talented Trotwood-Madison team last year, I'd say that following that victory up with a win against Cincy Colerain at Colerain this year would definitely shut everybody up! Make it happen!

I personally don't think they beat teams that are better than them. Personally I think they do alot with the talent they have but they don't on a consistent basis beat more talented teams. IMO.

I don't think that Highlands plays against more talented teams on a consistent enough basis to develop any trends. I'd say that year in and year out, there are only a very few number of KY teams that are better than the 'Birds... unless HHS were playing Trinity, Louisville Saint Xavier or Male every year it's doubtful that they would consistently run into a KY team that's "better" than they are (they do play several teams that are comparable, like LexCath and CovCath). But in terms of teams that are just plain better than HHS, there just aren't many at all in KY that are. Hence, a lot of HHS' recent losses coming to Ohio competition.

Well, you could start with the '95 team that certainly upset a Covcath squad and made a run for the state title would be an example.........some others mentioned X, Male, T, TM (OH)......But for the doubters, I would bet some CovCath (& LexCath)faithful would have to admit that they thought their team was better than HHS in several different years in the "Dale" era yet stayed home after a tough loss to the Birds .........bet it kinda felt like the '97 Birds squad felt I'm sure.

Dale Mueller gets more out of his players than any coach around, and quite often upsets the few better teams they play (see CCH '05).

 

In high school, it is very difficult to beat a team that has more talent unless the other staff happens to be a trainwreck (see TM '07).

 

Mueller received some very unfair critcism in '05 after the LexCath loss; LC was very talented and very well coached (Spire took an also-ran in GA to the Finals).

 

Highlands fans should be extremely thankful they have such a top notch coach coaching their sons (I think most are).

Thanks you Mr. Reality. Most Highlands fans are thankful and realize we have a great coach, and more importantly a great person leading our sons. Do I agree with every play called by Dale? Of course not. But it should be really, really hard to criticize a guy who has won 6 state championships, I would think.

 

I would also think that Dale and his assistants have to be at the top of the list when it comes to developing their players into becoming the best football players they can be. And if that's not the sign of a great coaching staff, I don't know what is.

Stop it already!!!!!You know what year it was. It was the year that Dale walked into Duffy's schedule. Remember going to Galbreth Field and getting blasted by like 50 by Moeller. We did give Cov-Cath a scare that year in the last moments of the playoffs.

Not many teams beat more talented teams on a consistent basis, especially on the high school level. But Highlands takes care of business a good % of the time.
