What schools refuse to play other schools?

Featured Replies

You are correct, In that SHS does not shy away from some bigger schools, but they do shy away from PC and SW every other year and they always get to play them on there home field when they do play.

So, my question is why does Somerset refuse to play SW and PC in the same year. The best scenario is that SHS travels to whichever school they don't play in the Correll, but it is not going to happen untill something changes. And that is a sad situation, becuase I think it would be great to see those games played.

I agree with you, I would love to see Somerset play both Pulaski and Southwestern each year. As to why they don't, I can't answer that am not going to speculate why becuase that is all that it is on most of our parts--speculation.

Graybeard, I guess we were both wrong, I was told by someone that the Raceland/Ashland game has been renewed with a two year contract. I'm glad, surprised, but glad.

Really?! - I guess I should get out of the prediction business.

Thanks for sharing the news.

Dont I recall Ashland and Raceland playing at Ram Stadium Once?

Raceland and Ashland had a scrimmage at Raceland one year while the series was suspended, but they have not played a game against each other at Raceland, in recent history. In 1987, I believe it was, Raceland played Ashland at Tank Statium in Ironton, due to renovations at Putnum Stadium. That is the only time the two have played outside of Putnum Stadium in recent history.

I realize it's not two Kentucky teams, but Russell and Ironton, OH, haven't played each

other in almost 20 years. Now I have heard several theories as to why this occurred,

but the one I choose to believe is that neither Coach McGlone nor Bob Lutz wished to

go head-to-head late in their careers. I think they've made a deal to play each other in

2009 and 2010 home and home, but for being in such proximity - that is to say they

are 2.2 miles apart across the earth's surface according to Google Earth which is closer

than any other school is to Russell, including Raceland -to one another it has been a

little odd for me never to see them play.

:DI believe that Somerset was offered a home and home with PC for 09-10, now that PC is not in the Correll Bowl, but Somerset turned it down. They are not playing SW either, so I don't understand why they would turn it down if it is just one of the county schools? IMO I don't think Somerset minds playing the County schools as long as they are in control of the situation. Playing only one of the two schools in a season on the road is,evidently, not having control.

BTW, playing schools that are bigger has unfortunately become a small part of PC schedule as well, seeing how they are the smallest school in 5a. Oh, woe is me!:D:D:D

Ashland has been approached by numerous schools for home and home series, some with much more prominent recent successes, only to be told that they will either:

A) Only do a two year contract if BOTH games are at Ashland

B) They will only do a one year contract with the game AT Ashland

Pikeville is playing Ashland for the second consecutive season at Putnam this season. Belfry approached Ashland for a Home and Home and had to settle for an Away and Nothing. The Raceland fans also enjoy their annual visit to Putnam which they will open the season off with... despite defeating the Tomcats in two straight season's they will make yet another visit to Putnam.

...and since we are on the topic of teams not playing other teams... after Ashland's rare Home and Home with Pburg wound up featuring a Pburg romp... the Tomcats have blacklisted the Blackcats.

Russell plays Ashland at home every other year.

No way that Ironton is closer to Russell than Raceland.

Most people just assume that if a school won't play another it's because their afraid of taking a loss when that is probably the rarest of reasons. It's all about the mighty dollar people!

Boyle Co. and Lincoln Co. does not play each other,I don't know why,if for some reason it's a refuser of one team or the other or not.But they should be playing,I would think this would be good for both teams, and only a few miles apart.

Boyle and Lincoln were in the same district a few years back but when French took over the LC program Chuck Smith and Larry did not want to play eachother because they used to be on the same coaching staff(Larry Head Coach and Chuck being the assistant) Now that French is at Boyle I think it would be a good/great game for both teams!!!

Looks like Harlan High School & (the new) Harlan County will not play for some time either. The Powell situation...I just do not get that.......

Why would Harlan Co. Black Bear play Harlan High School?:irked:

I thought the Powell situation had been resolved.

I wish Somerset would play both County schools each year too. However, there is a big difference in being the smallest school in your class and playing schools 3 classes above your size. I don't see any 6A schools and only 1 5A school on Pulaski's out of district slate this season. I wish the Maroons well but I don't think Somerset has to validate its program by playing the county schools. In the end Coach Cobb's job is to do what is necessary to compete for in Somerset's class. When it comes down to it the Jumpers have been much more proficient at doing that than both county schools combined.

I thought the Powell situation had been resolved.

I think they are trying to work it out.:irked:
