My question to you is, do you think it should be up to the owner/operator of the restaurant to decide if it should be smoke free or not?

I was standing in line at the license branch in Jeffersonville, Indiana this morning waiting to get my car licensed here in Indiana....oh was this an eye opening. In Danville you would walk into the courthouse and unless it was the end of the month you might have a few people ahead of you. Well that wasn't the case here. It opened at 8:30 and at 8:00 there was a line a mile long waiting for the doors to open. ANYWAY......I was standing in line with these two gentlement, one was 75 and the other 71, and one was retired from the Army and the other from the Navy. They got on the subject of the smoking ban that they are trying to enact in New Albany, Jeffersonville is smoke free already. Well these two men are furious that the government is trying to tell people what to do. They think that if you own your own business you should be able to make the decision of smoking or smoke free. A couple of young men got into the conversation and they thought that smoking should be banned and if anyone was caught smoking they should be shipped off the planet. These two older gentlemen gave these young people some sound advice about not letting the government control your life. I thought this was very interesting. Here we have two men who fought for this country and neither one of them smoked but yet they are scared of our government having too much control over our lives.

I'm not saying that smoking shouldn't be banned, because if I had anything to do with it there wouldn't be any cigarettes sold in the US. But it isn't about my wants, it's about what's right and it just isn't right to give our government total control of our lives. Some will say that they aren't giving the government total control but YOU ARE. Where will they stop? You had better think about my question - Where will they stop - before you go gangbusters over a cause.

As far as restaurants go, I think it should be up to the owner. People would know in advance and plan where to go accordingly. Malls and other public places should be smoke free IMO.

I kinda agree, I think that the establishment should have it posted up somwhere outside of the restarant that it IS, a smoking restaurant.... If a ban is approved. This would be the only a restaurant wouldn't be forced to take part of the ban, otherwise, then smoking would be banned. Only gray area, is I would hope that the gov't wouldn't start requiring a "smoking license", for a restaurant to allow smoking. Though I'd imagine people on both sides of the aisle would be for it, due to the revenue it may create.

It seems that many who would ban tobacco usage have a very poor sense of tobacco's role in our nation's history. This country was founded on tobacco futures, and wouldn't exist if it weren't for tobacco (or, at least not in the form it takes now).

The same could be said for slavery. But I'm all for banning that too.

Not really. This country was founded with the intention of exploiting the land for material gain. The exploitation of Africans was an unfortunate consequence; one the colonists sadly viewed as the cost of doing business.

What about restaurants that turn into bars at night? I'm just curious as to what you all think, should they make a time in which people can begin smoking indoors if there were a ban?
