Its my understanding that the girls b-ball team had not used 8th graders until a recent change.

Do you know if any frosh or upperclass were cut due to the 8th graders playing?

Ok? And not to be condescending at all, but whats your point?

Gentlemen, I'm implying nothing. However, I have been told that some NCC parents were not happy when the policy changed to allow 8th graders to play high school ball. That would seem to tie into the theme here of parents not being happy with the former coach.

To ny knowledge there is no "policy" at NCC regarding 8th graders.

I wish the parents that believe there is some great conspiracy against or for certain names or kids at NCC would just go away as 99% of the time, the kid they're taking with them will not be missed on the field/court.

If your kid is good enough he/she will play. PERIOD.

Nobody was ever cut because of this.

First of all, 8th graders have, in the past, played Varsity sports at NCC.

I played golf and Timmy Sandfoss played football as an 8th grader.

I know there were more but off hand that's all I have.

Secondly, Mr. Dawn was not going to be with boys this year anyway.

Lastly, knowing both Mr. Dawn and Grant pretty well, I believe this is an excellent hire and probably the best avaiable option, I have no doubt at all the Mr. Dawn will still be a willing and very helpful resource to Grant going forward.

He must have played JV because the KHSAA does not allow 8th graders to play varsity in a contact sport.

How long has that been the rule? Timmy is a dinosaur!! He played in MY era!!

That is good. It would be a shame to cut someone for an 8th grader that could possiby go to high school elsewhere.

Don't 8th graders play on plenty of freshmen girl's teams throughout the region. I thought that was a pretty common situation, especially at the A schools that may have trouble getting 10-12 freshman for a team. Especially if there are freshman playing JV or Varsity.

I know some schools will play freshman at all 3 levels if they can but that is a topic for another thread.

Any school that plays 8th graders is at risk of them going to a different HS. Who were 8th graders that played frosh last year and then went to another school?

Publics tend to do it. I think the privates try to stay away from it because there may be more uncertainty where the 8th graders may wind up. Take IHM students for example, these can attend Notre Dame, St. Henry, Holy Cross, and maybe Villa. Watching an extaordinary player at St. Pius some years back, I asked a parent as to why she wasn't playing up? I was told that they refrain from doing so because of the uncertaintity involved. Have their been any other privates besides NCC, taking 8th graders from other schools and playing them up to the frosh team? I don't recall any last year, I may be wrong.

Just curious. Is that an innocent statement or is there something to be read between the lines.

As a NewCath grad, you would say that it is sort of the truth. It is actually Pangallo/Zimmerman and the Sandfoss families that tend to always have multiple kids at NewCath at the same time.

You are referring to 8th graders playing in summer leagues and camps with the varsity. My cousin was among those affected by that. My cousin was a senior and above average senior (she was an All-Region goalie) who had some time cut over the summer b/c of that. Granted the 8th grader turned out to be a phenom, but at that point she wasn't as good as the seniors. No slight to anyone, but it was rather unfortunate and it set a tone that carried on for a few years.

Back on topic.

It will be intersting to see how the coach handles coaching females and whether he changes the way he communicates or how they respond if he doesn't change.

I've watched Coach McDonald, and she wasn't exactly soft on her players. I don't see Coach Dawn having to dial it down too much.

Don't forget the Smiths , and Kellys .

No, I am referring to 8th graders playing either on an NC team during the season.

For the record, I don't have a problem with it. I'm told, though, that more than a few parents did have a problem with it.I was wondering if this was the beginning of "parental distractions."
