June 4, 200818 yr It is a great time because it was just about 43 years ago that the civil rights bill was signed by Lyndon Johnson. I never thought I would see either a woman or a African-American nominated by a major political party in my life time. I remember Shirley Chisom's run for the presidency when I was a freshman in high school. I thought the best I would see would be Jesse Jackson's bid. On the Republican side I would have like to see what J. C. Watts could have done but I don't think the country was ready yet. I even thought back to the time I was denied the opportunity to go to a certain school I wanted to go to because of the color of my skin. I remembered the times I was stopped by the police because I wasn't in the so called right place. As I watched the returns last night, I thought back to what my mom and dad always told me. That no matter what a person's background is, in this country, anything is possible if you are willing to work for it. I just wished mom and dad and my two brothers had lived long enough to see this day come. So please forgive me if I take the time to celebrate this momentous occasion. And here's the ironic part of that: The Republicans had a higher percentage of Congressmen and Senators vote for the CRA of 64 than the Democrats. Repub were at 80% in both houses and the Dems were 61% and 63%.
June 4, 200818 yr He's referring to what you will have left in your paycheck after all your money is spent on welfare and foreign aide.:laugh:

June 4, 200818 yr Not trying to take away from your thunder or anything, lol. But don't you think that the main reason there was a large difference between voter turnout was because there was such a contested race on the democrat side which made more democrats want to come out and voter? You are probably right with a lot of your analysis, but by the time the primaries got to KY and many other states the Republican candidate had been decided for months. Check out the numbers from the earlier states like Iowa and New Hampshire!
June 4, 200818 yr BTW, its always a great time to be a democrat and it will be even better come November!

Your happiness is very understandable. I have reservations about all three of the candidates(I guess 2 now, but don't ever count out the Clintons). Hopefully whoever wins is ready for the tough job ahead of them and will lead this country to prosperity. I'm not as sure at Math is as to how the election will turn out, but I do believe that Democrats will decide it..................mainly the conservative democrats and women.

Repub were at 80% in both houses and the Dems were 61% and 63%. Neither party then looks like their namesake today. For example: George Wallace was a Democrat at that time (I can't recall but Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond might have been as well.) The Republican party boasted Nelson Rockefeller, Barry Goldwater, and Lodge I think. It was during the 70's that Democratic party shifted hard left and many of the former Dixiecrats left the party to eventually become Republicans.

June 4, 200818 yr I will agree with you only in that it is a great time to be an American. To me your post has nothing to do with D or R. I didn't post my feelings to have anyone agree with me one way of the other. I wanted to say what I was thinking about and feeling last night and during the entire presidential campaign.
June 4, 200818 yr Author I've been a registered Democrat for 40 years and I won't be voting for the democratic ticket this year. Oh Bahama and Queen Hilliary just don't do it for me. There are lots of registered Democrats who rarely , if ever, vote Democratic. I am not speaking to the DINOS, but passionate Democrats.

You nailed it...Every American - Democrats and Geriatrics alike should be appreciative of what just took place. It is historic, momentous, and awe-inspiring. If you don't chills thinking of what has just taken place, then you don't love this country as much as you try to pretend. I will be the first to say that there are still many racist elements that exist in this country, but the fact that an African-American and a female were vying for the nomination of a major party is something we all should be proud of. Some of you obviously are not. We have come a long way, but there is still a long way to go in overcoming the racial and gender bias in this country. Hopefully, Senator Obama can help us move forward to heal such bias and bigotry. It won't be easy, especially in this part of the country.
June 4, 200818 yr BTW, its always a great time to be a democrat and it will be even better come November! I was thinking it's never a great time to be a democrat. Oh well.
June 4, 200818 yr Dems have momentum and energy. McCain's camp reminds me of Bob Dole's lethargic campaign in 96. Enthusiasm just isn't there.

'75, you have good political insight , so I will ask you--what do you think the McCain camp can do, if anything , to inject some life into their campaign and claim some degree of momentum?
