That's sad. However, your town isn't alone I'm afraid, there are plenty of towns and cities (black and white) that are as racist.

It's a shame people can't look past skin color and look at a candidate's views, morals, achievements and so on.

I could not agree more. This town has the reputation, but other small towns in KY that I am familiar with are just as bad. KY is bad, but I am sure there are other states that are as bad as we are. We still have a long way to go.

 

I was tutoring an Arab fellow back years ago in Richmond. He had just come to this country from Saudi Arabia and was matriculating at EKU. He asked me where I was from and when I told him, he asked," Isn't that where that KKK is from?" I was embarrassed.

Curious math, do you find the prejudice is mostly the older generations?

 

The ones I deal with that say they WILL NOT vote Obama because of skin color are mostly older than me and were young adults during the 50's and 60's.

 

My generation does not have the problem, as much, in supporting Obama as my parents' generation does.

Yes, I have found it to more more prevalent in older folk. You are correct.

 

I don't know that much can be done about that. Those belief systems were established so long ago; not easy to change now. One of our leading citizens and the recognized town historian was interviewed in the movie"Trouble Behind". He denied that there was much, if any, of a racial problem here and then in the next breath told how he used the "N" word all the time,but not in a malicious way. "Why, I even called my dog n-----," he said smiling. There are even roads in the area that have the "N" word in the name.

Dumbest reason in the world to vote for someone, period.

 

Wait to see your children and grandchildren will be paying if we get this guy in, not to mention the horror of his health care system.

 

1. Sorry I wasn't clearer. I don't believe I said that the reason I would vote for Obama is that he is a man of color - I agree with you in that color is a dumb reason to vote for (or against) someone. What I was trying (unsuccessfully) to say is that I believe that it is an amazing thing that a person who may have had difficulty just voting for a president 50 years ago is in a position to be president.

 

2. What I am hoping for is that some of the hundreds of billions of dollars that currently go to funding wars on two fronts may be diverted elsewhere.
