If you want to be the best you got to schedule the best.....and yes I am from Lynn Camp and Coach Mitchell thought it would be an honor to play against a larger stronger school. I have always been told what dosent kill you will make you stonger. You know I am curious why Hazard backed out on a game with Harlan County? With Hazard being a top ten school next year ...why decline ???? Yes, Green County posted a nice record last year, but the gate proceeds would have been a bigger help to both schools not to metion starting a great rivalry.

 

I agree, "if you want to be the best you got to schedule the best"......however, Coach Mitchell is playing this game because of his relationship and respect that he and Coach Larkey have for one another. He tried to get Larkey to find another game in their place; but when Larkey told him that they were having a hard time finding people to play then he decided to keep the game. I'm not knocking Coach Mitchell - or Lynn Camp- at all, he has done an outstanding job. If they win or lose this game, it will make them stronger. I look forward to watching....it could be a dandy.

 

As for Hazard.......they were all about scheduling a game agaisnt HC, and all that was left to do was sign the contract. Once Larkey was named the coach they stopped responding to county officials repeated efforts to get the contract signed. I'm not saying that his hiring had anything to do with them changing their minds, but it did seem odd. After weeks of trying to reach Hazard about the game, they finally responded back and said they decided to go a different direction and play in Lexington.

 

Again, I'm not trying to be negative or critical about anything I said.......just stating what I was told.

If HDE gets this impression from me anyone may have, so let me make this a public apologia to anyone who attends or has graduated from a Harlan County School. I truly have never meant to say that Harlan High is the be all/end all. Our school has issues like any other. If I have offended anyone, please forgive me. My issue with the county I guess is really an issue only with a couple of folks and I may have been projecting a little with them in mind. I will in my own defense say that there are other negative mentalities from some of the county folks who post here as well, but thats up to them to correct. I really believe that there are many positive things ahead for the county system if they focus on education. Its ok to have great sports teams, and a fine school. My cynicism comes from lack of faith in some in leadership to make it happen. I am going to have to correct my attitude and in order to be able to do that, I am going to join with my arch-rival Lungbuster, and even to take it further, will not post anything negative ever again about the Harlan County School System. I very much appreciate HDE and all of my friends and aquaintainces who are products of the County system, and I'm sorry that I've allowed myself to offend any of them in responding to LB or any other that I let get my hackles up. So my new motto is "if you can't say something good, don't say anything at all". Sorry guys. oh.. Go Big Green! couldn't resist.

 

If you hold your tongue about the County system you will blow up Pap Daddy. If the rap between us doesn't continue I will not renew my membership with preps next year. I love to get under your skin more than eating my favorite meal and since I am almost 300 pounds you can tell I really like to eat so I must enjoy riding you like a bank mule more than most.

On a football note, went to the 7 on 7 at Pineville where there were four teams doing pass skelly, Knox Central, Williamsburg, Harlan Co and the host lions. Some positive things for the Bears were they had 34 players compete using two seperate units, it looked as if they had twice as many players as any of the other teams. Blanton seemed to be the qb with the 1st group he did some things well, some good reads, he also throws a dart and the receivers need to work on catching some balls with a little zip on it. On the offensive side they were running out of trips or bunch set out of the shotgun with one back in the backfield. There was some confusion as expected but they were being coached up between each play and seemed to respond. On the defensive side I could see where Lungbuster felt that a passing team could give them trouble, especially in the early season. I spoke with one of the coaches and the basis of their scheme is to stop the run first, so it would be hard to gauge their effectiveness in a setting like last night. Coach Larkey and staff have a lot of ground to cover in a short time, plus trying to learn all of the players strengths and weaknesses. After one viewing there are a lot of things in place to be a nice team, but fans should be very understanding that this a building process and there could be a few bumps in the road, but I see the road getting some blacktop and the ride smoothing out .

 

Pass Skelly is about useless as can be in trying to decide how a team will perform come game time. However, it is a great way to get your kids together and work as much as possible on the system. I know every crow thinks hers is the blackest and since I wasn't able to see with my own eyes I called and talked to one of the other coaches from the teams down there. Let me tell you a little what he had to say. Very, very athletic, good looking kids, team speed was great, attitude was excellent, numbers were good. When I ask if he thought they could compete this year he responded by saying " duh". He told me with what they have and Larkey guiding them people had better get their tickets because if a few things fall into place this bunch could be special. Bayshore Drive, thanks for the review of the skelly but I will have to tell Harlan Co. and the rest that they were snakes within watching every move. Wasn't the city passing ball somewhere for you to go watch. lol

They were offered an opening in a bowl game in Lexington, I am sure the weighed the option of a bowl game in Harlan to one in Lexington. With the team they have coming back one could see how they might opt for state wide coverage through the media. IMO

In all fairness the three other teams have had time together and know each other and their assignments on both sides of the ball, whereas HC has only been together for a few days. Harlan County High will be something special but it depends on a few things falling into place just like 100's of other teams across the state.

For some reason I am getting the idea that you might drive across the mountain and watch the first game. I called Hillard and he said City money spent over their as good as any. lol

Has anyone heard of how the Black Bear practices are going? Today was their second practice together and I was just curious how things are going. Are there any no shows? Who is impressing the coaches? Where is Lungbuster? He seems to always be on top of things with the Bears.

I also seen the pass skelly and the Bears are going to have very good team speed. I think they could have the most team speed in the mountains. They should even be quick up front.

Ok Ok I'm here LB and being almost 300 pounds myself, we would make a good start to a fine line. Maybe I could recruit you (lol) to Harlan City with an offer to work at street sweeping or something. You know theres only 11 Bears can huddle up at once. Some of y'all might join our little old team. I guarentee a playoff game lol!
