Does anyone know the real name of these two companies?

 

British Petroleum - HQ: London, England

 

Royal Dutch Shell - HQ: The Hague, Netherlands

I wanna puke everytime someone says we have done nothing.

 

I know everyone in my area has cut back their driving as much as they can. We are always going places together, making one trip per week instead of daily DRIVES TO places we use to see as much as we would see our own home.

 

Cutting back on eating out and many other things.

 

Maybe those who post "we have done nothing" need to look around instead of speaking.

Everyone loves complaining, no one loves doing anything. Carpool, public transportation, anything. I'm going to come off as a jerk, but it sickens me that most of the above posters complain without even doing anything. You want a problem with America, there it is. Americans are so lazy and spoiled they don't want to work for anything anymore, they would rather just complain and moan and whine.

 

My mother and father live in rural Garrard County. He works for the U.S. Postal Service in Nicholasville, 22 miles from his house to his office. He goes to work at 3:30 a.m. and is the only person in the office for the first hour. Only one other employee lives in Garrard County.

 

This is certainly not an attempt to make him look like a hero, but how many other Americans are in the exact same situation? And while his government job pays well, many others are not so fortunate. My question is this: How can this person, or anyone similar, carpool? What public transportation runs from Lancaster to Nicholasville? Can he realistically walk to work?

 

Your ideas are appreciated, but unrealistic. I have no concrete answers, but for many, many people public transportation isn't an option and carpooling isn't feasible.

First of all, I do as much as I can. My point was not as much that everyone needs to do something (although they should), but instead that people shouldn't complain unless they actually intend on trying to find and inact a solution. It seems that you are doing everything you can- IMO you have earned the right to complain. My real problem is with those that don't lift a finger and still whine.

 

Regardless, the "tax the evil oil companies" idea won't bring prices down.

I agree that there are plenty of people in a situation similar to your father's, and that there is nothing he can do about it. But I'd also say there are about 50 times that amount of people that can do something but choose not to, but still complain. And I don't want to be painted as a global warming guy because I don't believe in the huge human impact on it like former VP Gore does. But I almost see it as our moral duty to do what we can to protect God's earth on an individual level.

 

BTW, it is not just about public transportation/carpooling, IMO buying energy efficient cars is almost a duty as well. I see so many people with huge F-150's; if I wasn't so philosophically against government control, I'd consider a law that said you had to own a certain amount of acres to buy a truck ( just kidding). But people complain, but buy huge trucks and gas-guzzling cars that they don't need. Unfortunately for me, I wouldn't really fit into a lot of the smaller cars, but I do everything that I can to do my part.

 

Finally, though, my most important point is that more taxes will not lower prices.

I watched the CEO of the Shell Oil Co. this morning on CNN. He said that the way to lower prices is to increase the production here in the United States. This will show the rest of the world that this country is serious about the cost of a barrel of oil.

That windfall tax is going to spoil billion dollar profits down to hundreds of millions. Hillary or Barak will enforce it. It's a good thing, it finally forces them to do more to make sure crude stays low, and more importantly it puts a A LOT of money into finding alternative sources.

 

McCain has oil ties I doubt he will do a windfall... but whoever it is will have to do something to get it back to around 2.25 or 2.50 or in 4 years they will be out of a job.

 

Americans are fooled in to thinking this is just the way it is. Because this administration has not wanted to do anything, they haven't had a reason too. Bush learned 2 months ago about 4 dollar gas coming, I posted an article on it.

 

65% of current voters say gas prices is there #1 topic. Do you think 3.50 gas is going to get anyone a second term?

Please explain how this will decrease the price of gas in this country. I have yet to hear one single person on here that was in favor of raising taxes on the oil companies explain how it would help.

As punishment for their greed. Not saying it would work; just that punishment is what it would be.

 

I have mixed feelings on this topic, because I recognize that the increases would only be passed on to the consumer. But what recourse do we really have? None? We're just to be held hostage by others' greed?

I have changed the way I drive. I coast to all stop lights and stop signs. I don't get over 55 on 2 land roads and only drive 70 on the interstate. This has upped my MPG by a lot.

 

We don't make any trips to go eat unless we have some other things to do. We don't just jump in the car and go eat anymore.

 

We traded vehicles to get one that gets better gas mileage.

:thumb: Exactly, I do the same things. I feel like people don't understand that the best way to change things is to appeal to individuals. If a lot of people do what you do, then it would make a difference. That is how I feel about environmentalism- the government regulations are unnecessary and harmful, but individual actions are good. Same thing with a lot of stuff for me- for example, I am going to start buying and eating a lot more corn because I know that it will help American corn farmers. I sound corny, but I love America and being an American so much, that I want every action I take to be an act of patriotism , as lame as it sounds.

Let's say you drive 1000 miles a month in your 20 MPG car. If you replace it with a 25 MPG car, you'll save $36.50 a month. That's the equivalent of lowering the price of gas from $3.65 a gallon to $2.92. If its an SUV that averages 15 MPG, its the equivalent of dropping that same gas down to $2.19.

Gas companies are evil. The people who run them are bad, bad, people, who enjoy watching others suffer.

 

No. If you were in a business where the cost of inputs were going up (as well as the fact that the natural resource that you use is becoming more and more scarce), would you not maximize your profits now? And if Americans are willing to pay this, why not?

Taxing gas companies will not lower prices. If any of you ran a business, and the government said we are going to take more of your money, would you lower your prices, so that you could make even less money? Nope.

 

John Anthony you need to be more specific in how it will help the develop of alternative fuels. You can't say that it will drive down gas prices and also help develop alternatives. What could happen is that it would drive up prices and alternative fuel development could be accelerated, but who knows how much getting these alternative fuels to the market actually costs.

 

But it doesn't matter, just like the theme from this thread, everyone will just continue to complain.

 

 

Big oil is not putting what congress wants into alternative fuels. Exxon donated 100 million to alternative funding. Half of what AROD makes over what 8 years, not even that probably, and they made 40 billion last year.

 

Big oil does not want to invest billions into alternative funding to return millions. And again each time oil goes up just $1.00 big oil makes millions.

 

On my CNN blog which I read daily.. the big dog from Shell was on today. Weird coincidence, about 6 months away from a new president and they are showing up trying to justify there profits and asking for no windfall taxes. Where were they 2-3 years ago... sitting back and enjoying it.

Congress can pass a measure allowing domestic drilling in Alaska, the gulf and off the coast of California. 80 billion barrels of oil waiting to be tapped.

As far as those who oppose this for environmental reasons, we can drill and not destroy the environment. All the doom and gloom predictions of how Alaska would be destroyed by the pipeline have never come true. Yes I know you will say that was the pipeline then, but what about now? There will be accidents, but the world will not come to an end. With even better technology, damage will be small or not at all.

Yet there will be those who will still say no. It is a good thing that these doomers and gloomers were were not around when man discovered fire, our ancestors would have frozen to death and there would be no BGP.

 

I agree completely that all of this could be done by congress, it just will not be done by the current Democratic congress or senate.

I was asking more of what can they do today? One poster said, "Just wait until this fall". For what an unjust windfall tax? How will that lower gas prices?

 

Each of these companies has a responsibility to their share holders to make a profit, if the majority of that profit is taken is that right? I know if my 401K or retirement holds oil stocks I would not think that it was fair.
