Also ummm European based companies, that some how the US government controlls and dictates? Newark I love ya buddy but you've got me lost in the middle of no where without GPS, Mapquest, A cell Phone, or even a flare, as to how US politicians directly effect these companies profits....
April 30, 200818 yr I saw a bumper sticker today. I may have the exact figure wrong, but it said something like "When Bush took office, gas was $1.46 a gallon". I just don't see how folks on fixed incomes can make it; and I sure don't see how people earning minimum wage can travel any distance at all to and from work and survive. Gas is up to $3.63 in Maysville today. Record profits for the major oil companies continue. And there are many who will still try to tell us that this is a good thing. PS - the most interesting argument that I've seen here on BGP justifying the high price of gasoline is the cost to ship oil here. I still get a chuckle out of that one.

The articles I have been reading all have said demand is down since the prices have been going up.

April 30, 200818 yr What can congree do? Congress can pass a measure allowing domestic drilling in Alaska, the gulf and off the coast of California. 80 billion barrels of oil waiting to be tapped. As far as those who oppose this for environmental reasons, we can drill and not destroy the environment. All the doom and gloom predictions of how Alaska would be destroyed by the pipeline have never come true. Yes I know you will say that was the pipeline then, but what about now? There will be accidents, but the world will not come to an end. With even better technology, damage will be small or not at all. Yet there will be those who will still say no. It is a good thing that these doomers and gloomers were were not around when man discovered fire, our ancestors would have frozen to death and there would be no BGP.

Congress is controlled by Democrats so they could use that to help their presidential candidate, correct? The fact is they are just as much in bed with Big Oil as W. What type of legislation are you supporting?

No. If you were in a business where the cost of inputs were going up (as well as the fact that the natural resource that you use is becoming more and more scarce), would you not maximize your profits now? And if Americans are willing to pay this, why not? Everyone loves complaining, no one loves doing anything. Carpool, public transportation, anything. I'm going to come off as a jerk, but it sickens me that most of the above posters complain without even doing anything. You want a problem with America, there it is. Americans are so lazy and spoiled they don't want to work for anything anymore, they would rather just complain and moan and whine. Taxing gas companies will not lower prices. If any of you ran a business, and the government said we are going to take more of your money, would you lower your prices, so that you could make even less money? Nope. John Anthony you need to be more specific in how it will help the develop of alternative fuels. You can't say that it will drive down gas prices and also help develop alternatives. What could happen is that it would drive up prices and alternative fuel development could be accelerated, but who knows how much getting these alternative fuels to the market actually costs. But it doesn't matter, just like the theme from this thread, everyone will just continue to complain.
