Public schools to refrain from playing private schools

Featured Replies

Somebody please enlighten me as to what this IS all about. ... and I am comforted on being reminded that the doctor I see, the person that fixes my car brakes or the elevator I ride on... may not be the best qualified person. :scared:

My 100% guess is that the superintendents who voted for this feel that the issue is not being addressed in a manner that they think is appropriate and using this action to spur it being addressed in a manner that they think it should.

If they believe this is the final action and the way to solve this dilemma, than I feel they are wrong.

I would hope that those on the other side can see that 174...ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FOUR....superintendents signed this thing. So either 174 educational leaders are cowards and hypocrits and have no clue on what they are doing or maybe, just maybe, there is something to it.

If this was any other issue and 174 superintendents agreed, would that give that issue a little bit of credibility than it did have?

I hope this is just an action to spur movement on the issue and to point out that they are not happy with the status quo.

Cowards

Again a great example for the students you are supposed to be teaching. If it gets to tough then quit.

Cowards? I think it is hilarious to listen to people like you panic...... :D

Define issue....

Unfortunately, I think this is a dilemma that the issue changes per the person you talk to.

Some see it as cheating.

Some see it as a football issue.

Some see it as a girl's sports issue.

For me, I don't see it as a private/public issue but an open/closed enrollment issues and some schools being able to pull from multiple counties and having a distinct advantage over schools who are not capable (notice I did not say they have voted to have closed boundaries) of pulling from mulitiple counties.

Thus, why I personally would like to see a closed/open split with the possibility of two different size classifications in closed and in open. Local schools would then decide which division they want to compete in closed or open. Boundaries would have been determined and they would stick with that for closed. They want to draw outside of those boundaries, THAT IS GREAT. And they will compete in open.

You chose where you want to compete and like schools are competing against like schools.

And what rules are those pray tell?

Staying out of the public schools and paying for your athletes. And do not say it hasn't happened either. For the most part Public schools play by the rules they take the kids that live in their district.

For the most part Private schools give tuition to the kids that can jump run fast or shoot the 30 foot jump shot.

Tell me the last time a private school gave financial aid to the poor kid that wanted to go there but was a little troubled and had no clue what sports were?

NEVER!!! Because it would make the school look bad. And you call yourself a religious school with morals.

There is no such thing as a "level playing field". No matter what you do every team will have some sort of perceived advantage/disadvantage in comparison to another. That is life. My point is simple. My schedule is going to continue to contain the best possible opponents in the state and other states to prepare my team for post season play. I do not care if those opponents are public, non-public, catholic, christian, polka-dotted, or rainbow colored. Being told NOT to play one of these groups of teams is IMO not in accordance with my goals which is competing at the highest level. Anything less than that is unacceptable to me.

Very well put and I would agree with that as well. This would solve everything I think.

Private school supporters: While you and I will debate this issue, please do not lump me in with the posters who post things above.

Remember this while we are discussing and debating. I do NOT hold the same position as those who post like above.

Nothing personaly wcj but I am just trying to save me some time and posts in the future.

Does any other state have a split for open enrollment and closed enrollment? Not public/private, but open/closed enrollment.

You are 100% correct.

BUT, there are different degrees of unlevel playing field. If the field is slightly tilted, let's say a 5 degree tilt, well that is always going to be there.

But tilt the field in (just a number I am pulling out of the air) 45 degrees in one person's favor and that is a situation that needs to be addressed.

I am sure that the 177 superintendents feel it is more like the latter degree tilt than the former.

For the most part private schools play by the rules too. Neither side can claim 100% innocence.

Pretty bold statement. How do you know that these students didn't get the FINANCIAL AID because they qualified financially for it.

Our school does it every year. Financial aid is given regardless of athletic ability, behavior, or religion. You say things that are not ture.

And that is where we differ. IMO the "tilt" is no where near that large, one way or the other.

Many of the coaches I have talked with about this issue have stated that they will leave the high school game if they are not allowed to prepare/compete at the highest level. The supers "solution" is not a solution at all, it is weakness of the highest order IMO. IMO if this is implemented it will only decrease the quality of play across all sports.

wjc800 FYI the last time aid was given to a kid who wasn't a superstar in sports was today.... Try to refrain from making such "silly" statements.

I am sure it has but the bad eggs lump the whole group and that is sad. Hey I see plenty of advantage to sending a child to a private school.

Smaller classes, more one on one trust me I am all for a kid getting a good education and the best that they can get.

Also if it was a silly statement then you would be saying that it never happens but you know and I know that it does. All I have to say is sports used to be in this state man this team is going to be good when that kid gets there and man can't wait to see him play.

Now all you here is that kid is good he will probably end up at __________? Kids want to go where it will benefit them the most I guess, maybe it is us greedy parents that want our kids to be successful by any means possible whatever it is I just hope it gets resolved soon.

Let me add one more thing my son wants a chance to play the St X's and Trinity's of KY football before he graduates to be able to get some recognition because they have set the bar for success in high school football.

And that is where we differ. IMO the "tilt" is no where near that large, one way or the other.

If it is their solution, I agree.

I hope it is a strategy to continue to move the issue along to a final solution.

Maybe. However I do not think any solution any group can come up with is going to provide a "level playing field". It just does not exist. No matter what the outcome, there are always going to be differences between teams. Grass, sport-turf, field-turf, dirt, small gyms, big gyms, student cheering sections, monetary contributions to the program, talent, coaching, number of coaches, time, effort, commitment, parental involvement, booster involvement, community involvement, numerical differences, weight rooms, concrete running tracks, rubberized track surfaces, not having a home field, not having a junior varsity program, not having a freshman program, not having a middle school program, training equipment, access to club opportunities outside of the high school season, etc., etc. etc.
