Great College players...Not so great in NBA

Featured Replies

Does Scotty Thurman count? He made All-SEC 3 times and helped Arkansas to back to back title appearances. He came out early and didn't even get drafted--never played a single NBA game.

For the UK faithful:

Tony Delk

Scott Padgett (career:4.2 ppg)

Johnny Cox

Wayne Turner

Jeff Sheppard

I like everyone of these guys. All of them were pretty good ball players, but I'm not sure any of them qualify as great in college. It's not like they were lottery picks who were busts.

Rick Robey--remember he was picked 3rd overall by the Pacers and ahead of Larry Bird (although this was after Bird's Junior season so the Celts had to wait a year on him). But to his credit he did end up being traded for Dennis Johnson so he helped the Celts out.

Robey is one of the few if any of the pro players who can say they won a NIT, NCAA, and NBA Title.

How about these:

Larue Martin- selected #1 overall in 72 by the Trailblazers ahead of a young man by the name of Julius Erving and never averaged more than 7 points in his career after averagaing 18 ppg and 17 rpg at Loyola in college.

Rick Robey- 3rd Overall Selection by the Indiana Pacers in 1978. Selected ahead of Larry Bird

Michael Olowokandi- 1st overall selection by Clippers in 98 ahead of Bibby, Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison, Dirk Nowitski, Paul Pierce, and Rashad Lewis who all had successful careers.

Shawn Respert- #8 1995, selected ahead of Kevin Garnett, Jerry Stackhouse, Damon Stoudamire

Chris Washburn- #3 overall, 1986, Warriors- averaged 3.1 ppg in 2 1/2 seasons and was on the streets before he turned 23

Kent Benson- #1 overall, 1977, Milwaukee Bucks-

Corky Calhoun- #4 overall 1972, Suns- Selected ahead of Julius Erving and averaged more than 6 ppg in his career just once. The 72 draft in general was very bad.

(#3 Dwight Davis #5 Fred Boyd #6 Russell Lee...all of whom were selected ahead of Dr. J and none played a single game for the team that selected them...Dr. J included.)

John Wallace never really panned out... He was an extremely solid college player...

Tom Gola of LaSalle is the only other one. But that still doesn't help Robey's NBA resume.

He has to be #1

Miles Simon, Arizona

Jacque Vaughn, Kansas

Wayne Simien, Kansas

Matt Walsh, Florida

Scoonie Penn, Ohio State

Lawrence Roberts, Mississippi State

Ed O'Bannon, Toby Bailey, Cameron Dollar, UCLA

Eric Montross, UNC

Bryant Reeves, Oklahoma State

Reggie Geary, Arizona

Lawrence Moten, Syracuse

Shawn Bradley- BYU (#2 to Philly 1993)

Adonal Foyle (Alltime NCAA leader in blocks...but he played at Colgate)

Did I say Matt Walsh? (I know I did, but I hated him...so I wanna rub it in)

That's a pretty good list. I would say Simon and O'Bannon would be head that group.

I'm not so sure about Simon. Sure he was MOP of the 1997 tourney but he wasn't ever as highly a touted player as say Vaughn, Simien, O'Bannon or Montross. He was an All-American in 1998 but I really feel like that was what the 1997 team accomplished--I just never felt like he was as good as he got credit for.

JJ has to be up there......for now.

Glenn Robinson and for that matter, Danny Manning.
