Great College players...Not so great in NBA

Good names so far, but there are plenty more. Pervis Ellison was the #1 pick I believe in 1989. Yes, injuries did play a part in his not so great career.

For all of their great collegiate success, Duke has not really produced great NBA players. Grant Hill is the obvious exception. I guess there might be another but can't put a finger on it.

Not sure if that speaks for Coach K's coaching ability or against it.

I would add the names of Jay Bilas, Mark Alarie, Johnny Dawkins. And Magette, Langdon, and Laettner.

Was it Jason Williams (motorcycle) who along with Hurley was in the car wreck, so they get a pass on no/minimal NBA career.

Well, there have been a few. Elton Brand, Battier, Boozer and Deng have all been solid players.

Duke churns out talent, but the transitions to the league are pretty tough.

Long day on the links and I knew I was missing some. Thanks. Those are in successful careers.

I'll throw a name out there.

One of the top 3-5 greatest collegiate players ever. David Thompson.

No way his NBA career came close to matching his collegiate career.

Mateen Cleaves (Michigan St)

Who was the player at Auburn about 5 years ago that was so tough and did nothing in the NBA?

Christian Laettner has already been mentioned, but he has to be #1 of all time.

Allan Houston

Maybe you meant Byron Houston. Allan Houston played 12 years and averaged 17.3 PPG and .402 % from 3 for his career. He also played in 2 All-Star games.

I don't know, David Thompson, should give him a run for his money.

Scott May of IU fame should be mentioned.

I believe I heard Bobby Knight call him the best player he ever coached.

Rick Robey--remember he was picked 3rd overall by the Pacers and ahead of Larry Bird (although this was after Bird's Junior season so the Celts had to wait a year on him). But to his credit he did end up being traded for Dennis Johnson so he helped the Celts out.
