As weird as things have been with him it wouldn't surprise to see him back out of it.

I hear how great BCG is a great recruiter, but he lost the states top prospect to Tenn. If Tubby was still coach everyone would be all over him about losing this kid. Now he may be good recruiter, but he lost this one to Pearl.

It's true. Scotty Hopson, the dynamic, blue-chip guard from Hopkinsville, Ky., has given a non-binding, oral commitment to Tennessee.

He's on a visit to the Knoxville campus, which is where I reached him a few seconds ago on his cell phone. I asked him why he chose Tennessee, and this was his response: "Why not Tennessee? There's a big tradition here, plus I know coming in here at the program I've got a good chance of coming in at the starting two-guard because Chris Lofton's leaving." He added that he felt comfortable with the coaching staff.

So what did Tennessee have over Mississippi State? "It just seemed like I could have more success here," said Hopson, who wants to be a one-and-done. "We're going to have the top RPI next year in schedule play so I know we're going to have a lot of ESPN games, CBS games, things like that."

Hopson, you'll recall, had an oral commitment to Mississippi State for over a year before reneging on the eve of the early signing period last November. Given that, it begged the question of whether this was a firm commitment to Tennessee or if there were a chance he would change his mind once more.

So I asked. And I got an interesting response.

"I don't just commit to a school without signing," he said. "I'm going to sign."

The first day of the late signing period is April 16.

He didn't lose this one to Pearl, he just didn't have an opportunity to steal this one FROM Pearl. Big difference.

He got in way late on him for one. UT had a full head of steam before BG even was involved.

Why did he wait so late?

BCG says he doesn't recruit kids that are committed elsewhere. He was committed to MSU up until January or February, while Pearl was recruiting him all through this. Not to mention, he never was able to get in on him early b/c he has only been at UK a year. He probably could have done a better job, but it wasnt all his fault either.

Tough loss for UK. Hopson would have been huge for UK next season and to think otherwise is ridiculous.

 

As far as the Miller vs. Hopson deal, Scotty is the better scorer at this point and that is what UK needed. You have to let these kids play their first college game before you make assumptions as to who will be the better college player.

 

I'm not one to hate a kid for not going to UK. He made the decision that was best for him and thats exactly what he should have done. I hope he does well at UT.

UT was full blast on Elliot Williams before he picked Duke. There was a lot of UT work behind the scenes on Hopson to that point, but before then he was a backup plan for the Vols.

 

When Hopson didn't sign in November, he was fair game until mid April.

 

It came down to a lot more than the few myths we've seen frequently posted. Williams signed in November and Hopson didn't . From there UT made it almost impossible for anyone else to catch up...

Which returns to what I said in the other post. The entire time he had been at UK, Hopson was committed until recently and the in-home period has not started yet.

Just read an article on the Hopson commitment but I don't think I can link it.

 

Hopson was quoted saying "Tennessee has a big tradition here."

He's playing basketball there, right ?

 

Also said that UK was basically a 5th option and it basically came down to Tennessee, Mississippi State, Louisville and Texas.
