Holmes (32-2) will meet Paintsville (30-3) in what will probably be the best second round game of the whole sweet 16.

 

Paintsville likes to get up and down and scores a lot of points where as Holmes presses the whole game and is very defensive minded.

Slone put up 35 in the first round, but we all know about Henderson's defense. Anyone who has seen him this year or last year knows the type of shut down defender he is.

 

The two have two common opponents in Bardstown and Magoffin Co.

I say that as long as Henderson does not get in early foul trouble, Slone is lucky to score ten points.

 

Just an opinion.

Paintsville showed an ability to break full court pressure and finish tonight, however they struggled with rebounding.

 

Holmes best offense, is their defense and setting up the fast break. Their half court offense was not so spectacular.

 

Should be a great game. I'll say Holmes in overtime by 3.....

A key stat IMO is that Paintsville has been held under 60 points just twice this year:

 

First game of the year: 59-52 W over Perry County Central

Region Championship: 59-44 W over Johnson Central

 

On the other side though, Holmes has only given up more than 60 points 3 times this year.

 

I'm interested in seeing how Paintsville handles the defensive pressure that Holmes will bring. I think Holmes depth will play a huge factor in the outcome of this game. Paintsville plays 6 or 7 guys and were clearly tired at the end of the game as thats when J'town made their run, where as Holmes played 9 in the first quarter alone before the 2 minute mark and have 10 regulars but can go 11 deep.

 

I see it being a close game the first half with Holmes starting to pull away in the second winning by around 10, give or take a few points.

Id love to see Paintsville win because its such a great underdog story, but I believe Holmes will be too much for them.

I wouldn't call Paintsville that much of an underdog. They have a great player in Slone and have played some of the best competition in the state and still own a 30-3 record.

Theyve not played as tough a schedule as Holmes. And when you look at the athletes on the floor with the 2 teams playing I don't see how you wouldn't think Paintsville is an underdog. Holmes is bigger and mor athletic.

I agree with Holmes being bigger and WAY more athletic and being the favorite but Paintsville has indeed played a tougher OUT OF REGION schedule.

 

The 15th region isn't as good as the 9th region, but Paintsville's out of region schedule was pretty legit. They played 4 sweet 16 teams during the regular season. (Lexcath, UHA, Bardstown, and Lincoln Co)

I was very impressed with Paintsville vs. JTown. I especially liked #4 and his ability to handle the ball and break people down off the dribble. However, I do agree that the turnovers they gave up at the end of the game against JTown were because they were tired. Also, while I love the excitement that kid brings to the game, I feel that he would save some energy if he didn't get so excited after every basket/foul/rebound etc.

 

Slone was impressive. How tall is he? I too feel that he vs. Henderson will be the key match up....

We all know a Single A mountain school is going to be an underdog to a bigger "Golden Triangle" school.

Did I ever say they weren't a good team? I think they are a very good team. They are as well-coached as just about anyone, and they are very tough kids who have developed their skills. That being said, they are the underdog.
