New Coach at Walton-Verona

Featured Replies

Look for Coach Richey to be a likely choice for the job.

I spoke with Bert. He is not interested in going back to coaching at this time & has no plans on applying for the position. In his words, "I would not give up that time with my daughter."

I hope that is not true. That would be a huge blow to all of basketball both boys and girls if this gentlemen left. If I were the Admin @ Walton he would get what ever he wanted. HE IS THE REASON that the feeder program Walton has is so successful:thumb:

I agree, and like I said they are just rumors at this point. I would like to see him stay as well though.:thumb:

I agree but I also feel bad for the girls that were sacraficed by this mistake. Coach Rosen was offered help by a lot of people on many occasions and choose to accept none. It's over and tiime to move on, but I do think the administration owes some of these girls a apology. It's not like this was a coach that just didn't work out. This was a coach who had no business being in this position from day 1.

To often administrators and coaches put themselves ahead of the kids. Often times people get coaching jobs handed to them because they are all friends or they have some connection to people within the school. Unfortunately there are a great many coaches out there who have no business being in a position and everyone knows it from Day 1. Even some who are close to the program and don't feel they can speak up. The ones who suffer are the kids.

Hopefully the Walton administration will do whats right for the kids and the program. It's time they listen from what it sounds like.

As I person who witnessed his attitude from the stands,:sssh: I would hope Cheesman doesn't have a chance. He was out of control at several of the games this past year. I don't believe Walton wants to jump in that boat.

Also, as far as cleaning house with all the coaches, the AD's spouse is one of the coaches and I can't see that happening. I believe the AD has a huge influence on who gets the new job. Just my opinion.http://www.bluegrasspreps.com/ubb/sssh.gif

I couldn't agree more. I was at the game where Walton played @ SK and all Cheesman did was stand up and yell at the officials. I thought he was already on the coaching staff..... the way he coached his daughter play by play from the stands. I was just under the assumption they were one seat short on the bench! I heard he does coach @ Ryle High School, if he wants to coach her maybe he needs to think about taking her there or let the coaches do their job.

Heard from a pretty reliable source Coach Richey is not interested in the job nor is Coach Wilhoit from Williamstown. Too much baggage seems to come with the program right now.

I heard the same thing. Both are out.

I just heard this morning, from a very reliable source, that the AD did in fact let her husband go as a coach and Coach Burger resigned to spend more time with her daughter. Coach Richey would be very fun to watch.

This person has DONATED more of his time to these programs than anyone. If he wanted the job, I believe the Administration should take a hard look at the rules that Walton has put in place. If this person can be successful at both jobs, then it's a win win situation. If he is the best person for the job, I think you have to consider him. Just do what is in the best interest for the student athlete's. And I agree with C-TOWN and Weakside, Cheeseman is not an option.

Again, he was told to step-down as the boy's assistant if he was going to remain in an administrative position. I think the Administration has made that clear. That's too bad because he would be a great choice. That's unfortunate for the girls just like it was for the boys.

I think you got some of the story but not all of it. Yesterday, I heard from a very reliable source, that the AD's husband is stepping-down to the middle school coach and the AD's daughter (who was the middle school coach) is replacing him as the freshman coach.

Seems like to me, that the new coach should be able to determine who the JV and Freshmen coach are (at least have a say in the interview process).

Maybe that is a part of the problem out there. Coaches not having enough input as to how things need to get done.

I agree. Doesn't sound like that happens at Walton.

Agree!! It's almost a must for a successful program.

Again, Scott Collins would be a perfect fit for Walton. They have a great program, both at the HS and with the feeder program, that he would put a lot of time in. He likes to press and get up and down the floor and would emphasize defense.

He would take ownership of the program and put the time and effort into it that would be needed to make them a year in and year out Class A regional threat and a threat for the Big Dance as well when the talent says it is a possibility.

Great, great fit.

You guys make it sound like people are beating the AD's door down for the chance to coach freshmen girls' basketball.

What baggage would that be? If wanting to win games and be successful is too much baggage then it's probably good that they're not interested. Anyone with any knowledge of WV's girls b-ball program understands how much talent and potential that they have coming up. There have already been some successful coaches show interest in this job and I'm sure there will be more. Also, as C-Town stated, Cheeseman is not an option.

The baggage I was refering to is some of the upperclassmen (and their parents) who think that just because they are a junior or senior, that they should be starting or playing the majority of the minutes. That could be a major distrction to the team in the next couple of years. I think if either was the coach at WV, they would put the best team on the floor, even if it meant cutting some of the upperclassmen.
