CCH 2002 State Championship when they went 40-3 and had the best record in the nation.

Newport had some good teams back in the 80's. Not sure what year exactly but I do recall them winning the regional then. Some outstanding players at that time too. Last season's team was kind of a so so team and ended up winning their district against a strong Highlands team.

2001 Franklin County team. Won 41st district, 11th region and Sectional. The Flyers lost to eventual state champion Boyd County. Every senior on that team and a couple juniors earned a baseball scholarship. Beat Henry Clay and Lexington Catholic on back to back nights to win the tough 11th region. Great players on that team including Brandon McKee, Daniel Clark, Adam Davis, Casey Hayden, and Daniel Scott just to name a few.

The 2005 Raceland team has the best record in school history with a record of 26-6 i believe. They were regional runner up to Boyd Co.. They got beat in 9 innings by 1 run in the regional championship on a very questionable call. They were a great team, I know Tolliver is now playing baseball at Transy, Darby went to Pikeville to play, Grizzle is a Georgetown playing football, and another key member Peyton Martin is will be a senior at Raceland this year and is being recruited by several colleges and is argueable the #1 player in the 16th region this year.

 

Not only questionable, an outright terrible call. Phillips threw that pitch right down the middle. If its called a strike, Raceland maybe wins in regulation.

Tolliver(+.500),Miller(.400),Darby(.400 and a few homeruns),Morris(nearly .400),Phillips(over .300),Deskins with some timely hitting,Martin also timely hits and great regional tourney. Pitching was anchored by Morris,Reynolds,Grizzle, and Phillips in relief. Great season, wished for better result in regional final.

I understand you completely. I was a junior at GCHS during that season. I hope that this group of boys enjoys the same success as the 96 team. I have watched many of them grow up and would love for them to experience that.:thumb:

 

I agree totally great group of players who I enjoyed playing with, as we all grew up in the little league programs and summer league programs together. 1996 was a great year of Baseball at GC. In reality during the 1990's GC Baseball was a great program period. Whether under the leadership of Bob Kouns or Jeff Wilcox Musketeer Baseball was great to watch.

For Owsley County, the best teams I can remember were the 1975 and the 1976 teams. They had great pitching, (5 pitchers they could rotate, 3 of them lefties.) Also they were good offensive and defensive teams. But the region allignment was different in those days, and we always had trouble getting past teams like Laurel County in the region. If the region was as it is today the Owls might have won the 14th at least once in those two years.

 

Owsley also had good teams in '80, '89 (region semis), '90, and in the mid-'90s (3 time district champs in 4 years, making it to the region simi's, I think, 2 of the 3 years.)

For Mason Co. I'm going to say the 1994 team. They are the only team to win a region championship at Mason Co.

He went on to play at UK for 4 Years and I think he might have hurt his shoulder or something. Also coached Baseball for Greenup 3 or 4 years. Good coach and had to quit for a job or something like that.

Kouns didnt coach in the 90's it was Claxon then Wilcox

I may be biased but I feel last years GRC team was one of the best in schools history. Record of 33-6. Beat the eventual champions with our ace pitching(who was 10-0). I feel if we had drawn nybody else besides Dunbar we could have been in the championship game..Led by 8 seniors.

 

 

I'm probably a lil biased too about last years team, but they were very successful. And not to mention those boys played so well as a team. They never quit & had so much heart. They were great to watch!

 

And I also agree about semi-state, but I'd rather have the harder road. I like the challenge. Although it ended there, it was a great season for those guys!

Lexington Catholic's 2006 state champion team (35-5). There were 4 seniors, the best being Michael Fahs who plays D1 college baseball. The junior class consisted of Ben Revere, State Tourny MVP and 1st round draft pick(currently in the Twins organization), Taylor Hatfield who plays at Cumberland in Tenn who is a top NAIA school, Jordan Root who plays at Eastern Kentucky, Travis Redmon who plays at Morehead, Wes Caldwell who plays football at baseball at Mid Tenn St. Justin Riddell who plays at Cincinatti. John Weaver who plays at Virginia. That makes 5 D1 players and a future major league player. Likely one of the most talented teams in Kentucky history and had the heart to win the title. The team was ranked as high as 4th in the nation during the season.
