KHSAA board blasts LCA: Says Violations Fuel Public-Private Enmity

Featured Replies

Private Schools should not be allowed to give Fianancial Aid. LCA cheated and should be stripped of there title and not allowed to participate this year. All public schools should boycoytt the Privates.

Cheating is cheating and if they used players that recieved improper help to attend there school then yes the punishment should be the same. LCA not only recruited players they also payed there tution illegally.

Are you demanding that all schools boycott J Town? If so, you'd be the first public school person I've heard of make that demand. Where is Sears' and other's letters and e mails on the coach's list serv calling for a boycott of J town? Uh, no where. When the publics clean up their own house, then and only then will I take their complaints about the privates a little more seriously.

Until then its just hypocritical, righteous indignation.

No more so than it is a self-imposed limitation on private schools that they don't receive state and federal funding.

It is because they don't want to have to have the state/federal testing and standards heaped onto them.

So the claim of "every kid is on financial assistance" that is lobbied on public schools is a self-imposed limitations to private schools.

Using your line of thought.

Um, no. The Kentucky constitution has a specific prohibition on state money for private schools.

If the coach is not fired, then I would support a boycott of Jtown.

Um, no. The Kentucky constitution has a specific prohibition on state money for private schools.

Federal monies?

I would like to read that prohibition and see if the privates followed all the state guidelines concerning education whether that would change the prohibition.

Any school caught recruiting or cheating or using ineligible players that were already in court, should have their title stripped. Highlands a few years ago was a good example.

Private Schools should not be allowed to give Fianancial Aid. LCA cheated and should be stripped of there title and not allowed to participate this year. All public schools should boycoytt the Privates.

Why should a private Christian school not be able to use their own money and offer need-based financial aid? It seems to me that this is a central part of their Christian mission.

Regarding a boycott, that would certainly be a mature and thoughtful way of dealing with the issue. Public schools cheat. Private schools cheat. Punish the cheaters and leave everyone else alone.

Painting all private schools with a broad brush as the great Satan serves no purpose. Do you honestly believe that ALL small Christian/private schools enjoy an advantage over public schools?? Explain to me how Lexington Sayre will have such a large advantage next week in district play. Lucky for Sayre they benefit from an unlevel playing field. Heaven help them if they didn't have this!

There are several small private schools throughout the state in this same situation, fighting many David vs Goliath battles throughout the season and always a huge underdog in post season play. If anyone should be crying it is them. Yet all of the complaints seem to come from larger, more afluent public schools such as the ones in Lexington (with their "courageous" boycott). Let them try competing year after year in the Sayre/Dunbar scenario and then we will talk. (By the way, I wonder why Sayre hasn't been boycotted by the Lexington publics???)

A small correction. The constitutional prohibition does not affect all private schools. Section 189 of the Kentucky constitution reads as follows:

"No portion of any fund or tax now existing, or that may hereafter be raised or levied for educational purposes, shall be appropriated to, or used by, or in aid of, any church, sectarian or denominational school."

Section 184 would apeear to prohibit the use of schools funds for anything other than a public school without a local referendum.

Let me set somthing straight.....

I agree with the BOC blasting LCA as well as anyone else that is cheating. Bottom line...it is much easier to catch the private because there is a money trail. In the public schools you can go several ways...as a parent...put your kid on the market to the highest bidder as I like to call it...as a coach...say your talking to the kid/parent about college stuff (by the way...that one still cracks me up):lol: or get the kid to come to your school for that "special program" your school offers.

Again, cheating happens in public and private. Do I have the answer on how to make it stop..No. Only thing I can say is punish the ones caught cheating to HOPEFULLY detour future cheating.

I still have a hiccup in the conversation whenever the phrase "cheating and recruiting for advantage . . ." enters the issue. This is a true "grey area" because we are talking about 12-17,18 year old children. Parents have the legal and moral responsibility to make what they feel are the best decisions for their children's present and future. I've said for years that the KHSAA's arm of control over a family's exercising those decisions is going to be a bone of contention. The cardinal rule is "parents are going to send their children to whatever school they want to for the reasons they want to." KHSAA making and enforcing rules that interfere with that premise are going to be subject to everything from mild scorn to violent rampages. The idea of restricting participation in high school activities because of where the child attended middle school is an interference in parental authority and responsibility. To imply that this decision process is "cheating" is, I think, a fight waiting for somewhere to happen.

The public schools have been involved in providing financial aid for several years in the form of breakfast, lunch, and books/fees subsidies. Before you bend out of shape over amount comparisions, I did a little research a few years ago. In 2004, the five public high schools in Fayette Co provided $1,400,000 worth of free/reduced breakfast, lunch, and books/fees. The argument always follows that this is not financial aid, but to get this, the student must bring a form home, the parents fill it out and sign it and return it to the school. On the form, to qualify for the benefit, the family must meet an income test. If this is not financial aid, what is it?

Isnt it amazing that the kids who get the fianancial aid from the so called Christian sources for diversity are star athletes. LCA without the girl from East Jessamine does not win the sweet sixteen last year. Seperate State titles is the only way to go.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion regardless of how wrong they are.

Since you like to paint with such a big brush how about this. J-town was just punished for illegal recruiting. Does that mean that all public schools do it? If so then WHAT is the need for separation because all private and all public schools cheat.

What LCA did was wrong, plain and simple, but if a Private School goes by the rules of providing financial aid given in Bylaw 7, do you wish they should be punished anyway?

Had the money been given out according to Bylaw 7, no violation would have occured.
