KHSAA board blasts LCA: Says Violations Fuel Public-Private Enmity

Featured Replies

Let me set somthing straight.....

I agree with the BOC blasting LCA as well as anyone else that is cheating. Bottom line...it is much easier to catch the private because there is a money trail. In the public schools you can go several ways...as a parent...put your kid on the market to the highest bidder as I like to call it...as a coach...say your talking to the kid/parent about college stuff (by the way...that one still cracks me up):lol: or get the kid to come to your school for that "special program" your school offers.

Again, cheating happens in public and private. Do I have the answer on how to make it stop..No. Only thing I can say is punish the ones caught cheating to HOPEFULLY detour future cheating.

I agree with you TD. The problem is that I don't think the punishment for these actions thus far is enough to deter anybody from doing anything.

I agree with you.

I may have to start another thread on this but a question I have always had...

Why is the BOC made up of alot of AD's, coaches?? I am not being smart about this either!

NOT true. There are many public schools that require tuition. There are also many people within these communities that would be willing to help students with this tuition, but they don't because it is illegal.

Please show me where it is illegal for a public school to give tuition assistance to out of district students. It may be and I've asked several times if it is but no one has been able to provide a difinative answer or any documentation backing it up.

Under Bylaw 7 of KSHAA rules, a public school is not forbidden, the way the rule is written from giving financial aid, as long as they do it in the manner perscribed in Bylaw 7, which all schools that give financial aid, have to follow.

What is that manner in Bylaw 7?

I would assume through an approved third party determining the need of students without knowing their athletic status.

Actually I'm looking for more then KHSAA rules, I'm looking for stautory prohibitions of public schools giving financial aid to tuition paying students. If it's just a case of them CHOOSING not to then as I'm sure LBBC and others are getting tired of hearing me say, it's a self imposed limitation and all schools should not be expected to abide by it.

And not to put to fine a point on it but if every tuition paying public schools student doesn't pay 100% of the cost of his/her education then they are in effect getting financial assistance from the taxpayers in the community where they are going to school. Someone has to pay those costs, if not the student then who?

The very spirit of high school athletics should determine that All schools should abide by it. If you are trying to stack the deck in every manner possible including paying for athletes to go to your school, you may need to retract back to trying to produce a better young man or woman through athletics, not a paid for product. Therefore schools should be expected to not give financial aid at the public, and for that matter the private level, IMO. Could you imagine the outrage that would occur in a public school system if this would occur?

Some school systems choose to drug test their student athletes. By "the very spirit of high school athletics" trying to insure a drug free environment is a very good thing and a commendible goal. However, should those school districts that choose not to drug test their students now be forced to do so to "level the playing field"?

I'm sorry but I don't see where the outrage would be justified. As has been explained to me, public schools that take tuition based students only do so if there are spaces available. If in-district students fill a school at or above capacity no out-of district students would be taken. If an outside foundation raises a fund and it is distributed based on need by an independent third party and with no regard to athletic status what has it hurt a non-tuition paying family? They are still going to school tuition free.

It hurts when a non tuition paying student gets to fill a spot due to being a good athlete and recieving aid over a student who was not an athlete, but wanted to pay tuition on their own to go to the school.

I don't understand your last post.

Athletic status should have nothing to do with who gets aid, in fact by KHSAA rules say that it can't be a factor. That's where the third party comes in.

Alltell,

LBBC provided that info in another thread. I believe that it was in conversation with covercorner. Not for sure where though.

Paying tuition for a student to come, when it is not appropriate as the KHSAA has stated, is the same as just paying a family money. Its not right. Anyway you look at it, it was the wrong thing to do. If a public school pays a kid to come to school there, that is wrong and if caught shouldn't be tolerated.

This is common practice in private school. Paying tuition for kids to come.

Financial aid .......not what LCA did.

Private Schools should not be allowed to give Fianancial Aid. LCA cheated and should be stripped of there title and not allowed to participate this year. All public schools should boycoytt the Privates.

If these kids tried out for their respective teams and were cut, they still would have received the aid. Could have been the best thing for them as well, as they wouldnt be out all this money now.
