Family 4 Ever Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Just curious why Fayette county has employed 2 officials for girls games but 3 for boys games... Isn't that a violation of title 9?
Lunatic1 Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Good Question The last game I saw with 3 officials the officials got in an argument about a call. I am not sure that it is necessarily better for the games. They do not use 3 for the girls games in the 8th either, unless it is a special tournament or something. I have wondered the same thing.
mcpapa Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Someone asked me that at the Mason County-BB girls' game last night. I always assumed that Title IX pertained to participation of athletes only. This snippet is copied from Wikipedia; the link is below: Title IX should be interpreted to maximize female participation in athletics irrespective of any existing disparity in interest. Thus while defenders argue that the three-prong test embodies the maxim that "opportunity drives interest," critics argue that the three-prong test goes beyond Title IX original purpose of preventing discrimination, and instead amounts to an exercise in governmentally-mandated social engineering whereby athletic opportunities are taken away from male students and given to female students, despite the comparatively lower interest levels of those female students. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_IX
jahearme Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Not all Lexington city boys games use 3 officials. Not sure of the requirements, but its only certain games.
LRCW Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Most girls games don't have the quickness and roughness that the boys games do. I don't think there is a need for 3 officials.
crazy8s Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I have seen three officials mulitple times @ girls games this year in the 8th region - especially with the top teams. They don't do a better job with three and one of them is always waiting for the other one to make the call.
3ptshooter Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I was under the impression that the home team coach request 3 refs, no matter if it is boys or girls(9th reg).
CCHS_Dad Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 In the 8th region all distict games are 3 officials (boys and girls) then it is up to the host school about the number of officials. 3 man games have different floor coverages so if you aren't doing it all the time you have to think more.
ladiesbballcoach Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I was under the impression that the home team coach request 3 refs, no matter if it is boys or girls(9th reg). :thumb: Home school determines whether they will ask for 2 or 3 officials from the assigning secretary.
Big Slick Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Each school is also highly encouraged to have a certain number of home games w/ 3 man crews, don't know the exact number but I heard it is going up next year.
Intentional Foul Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I have seen three officials mulitple times @ girls games this year in the 8th region - especially with the top teams. They don't do a better job with three and one of them is always waiting for the other one to make the call. I totally agree.
gchs_uk9 Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 In the 45th District it seems like the only time you see three referees is during district games (regular season and postseason). That's the same for both girls and boys games to my knowledge. I'm not usually a fan of three-man crews, either for girls or boys. It seems like there are too many whistles and each ref wants to get his calls in.
Copperhead Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 It is all about who wants to fork out the money. Small schools can't afford three man crews at 55.00 a pop when you pay 70.00 for two officials so if you play a Varsity boy/girl doubleheader your talking 330.00 for 6 officials vs. 280.00 for two officials. Alot of the times that is half the gate at small schools.
bballtimenthebluegrass43 Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 I don't mind either one, let's just be consistent. Let's either have 2 or 3 and stick with it. Doesn't matter if it's boys or girls. Be fair to the players and the officials!!!
UKCATSFAN Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Just curious why Fayette county has employed 2 officials for girls games but 3 for boys games... Isn't that a violation of title 9? No, I wouldn't think that Title 9 would have anything to do with it. It's up to the schools and coaches to decide if they want 2 or 3 officials. Some schools are willing to pay for the 3rd and some cannot pay for the 3rd. Some coaches like 2 man crews while others like 3. The officials' associations and assigning secretaries are pressing schools to always use 3 officials for varsity contests. Most schools use 3 officials during district contests now but hopefully in the future everyone will use 3 officials for everything.
