February 7, 200818 yr So does WKU take the crown of in state school that hates Kentucky players? I thought for sure they would at least have one. Personally I understand why universities such as EKU and WKU do what they do. But I want to hear what everyone else thinks.
February 7, 200818 yr Quote from Coach Elson, " Northern Ky? Is that past Louisville? It's near Cincinnati? Never heard of it."
February 7, 200818 yr I don't buy it when coaches say they can't win with KY players. Look at these schools that do it. UK UL G-town If I lived in Bowling Green I would not attend a game.
February 7, 200818 yr Quote from Coach Elson, " Northern Ky? Is that past Louisville? It's near Cincinnati? Never heard of it." Who would they have recruited in NKY? Remember, they're not 1-AA anymore.
February 7, 200818 yr I know of at least one kid from EKY they were recruiting, Belfry's Dustin May. I'm not sure if they offered him or not but they did heavily recruit him.

February 7, 200818 yr At least they don't take the Murray State approach.... MSU signs WAY too many local players who do well in west KY but are not D1aa players. Thus all the losing seasons since Panunzio got to MSU, thank god he's gone
February 7, 200818 yr Not that I fully agree with WKU, but in fairness, they are not trying to recruit 1-AA kids anymore. The Commonwealth produces very little major 1-A talent and WKU is still trying to make a name for themselves with the big boys. Recruiting inroads in these talent filled states will do a lot better for their long term success, by building credibility, than trying to appease the locals.

Not to mention that most of the 1A talent is quickly gobbled up by UK and UL, and even UC to some extent. A lot more pickings left to sort through in states like Georgia and Florida. I don't think it is a coincidence that they have had a fair amount of success using this recruiting tactic. I certainly don't think they'd achieve the same level of sucess by recruiting more in state players.

While the athleticism may abound in GA and FL, once the player has been passed over by every school in America before WKU (B/c everyone recruits those states) what makes them better than Kentucky kids that may have flown under the radar?

There is not much D1 talent in the state, that is the bottom line. Recruiting KY boys just for the sake of recruiting them gets the program nowhere, especially in the critical transition period that they are in.
February 7, 200818 yr I will never get the "recruit your state" fascination. Obviously, you want the best players and they happen to be in your state then, yes, you don't want to lose those. Agree 100%. However, recruiting your state for the sake of having hometown boys on your team just doesn't make sense.
