February 4, 200818 yr I think it is just like a judgement call, like HB20 said, if you can challenge this, why can't you challenge force outs, PI, etc...? I hate when a term like "judgement call" is thrown around recklessly. It is NOT a judgement call. It is black and white, no grey area. Either there are 12 men on the field or there are not (I think its obvious there were). There is no judgment ot be made here. Calls like force outs, PI, and the like have much more grey area and thus are much more subject to officials judgment. I'd be interested to read the responses had the tables been turned and no challenge was allowed. God forbid that the Pats would have had a 12th player on the field in a crucial down that didn't go the Giants way.
February 4, 200818 yr Unless the challenge flag as already been thrown, maybe the broadcast Teams should just wait until the next play to comment on close plays. I understand what you're saying, but like I said, unless the coaches are yelling, before the play takes place, we've all seen it before, then both parties that should be looking for it; the refs and the opposing team.

Understand...I just hope it wasn't the Buck comment that led to the challenge. That would just be wrong.

I agree, before instant replay was big and also while it was being introduced I'd heard that at the stadium contreversial plays often times wouldn't be shown imediately following the play, dunno how much that's changed, but it certainly adds or maybe even takes away an element of the game.
February 4, 200818 yr IMO, coaches challenges should only be used for outof bounds plays, scores, spotting and turnovers. IMO this was no different than challenging a fumble. If you win the challenge, you retain the ball. If you lose the challenge, you lose the ball and a timeout. I applaud Hoodie for it.

I applaud Hoodie for it. Under the current rules I agree, however I agree that the current rules shouldn't allow this type of a challenge.
February 4, 200818 yr I agree, I though that was pretty classless but then again. look who was throwing the flag wanting a review . I also agree with nkysl above in that I didn't think that could be reviewed. Classless? Throwing a challenge flag in a game is classless??

I also agree with nkysl above in that I didn't think that could be reviewed. I can't stand the guy but that was not classless at all. It was brilliant coaching and he put his team in a position to continue a drive. Do I like the rule? Not at all.
February 4, 200818 yr So why shouldn't they be able to challenge missed pass interference calls, missed holding calls, missed face masks calls, etc.......... ? Because there are more than a few shades of grey area in the calls that you described. They are open to interpretation to some extent. Not to mention it would be utter chaos. 12 men on the field is clean, cut, and dry. It either is or it isn't. This is a book rule, you play with 11 guys. I think a missed/bad judgement calls are part of the game, and to a certain extent, accepted by players and coaches. It happens. But what happens when a team sneaks on a 12th player for an important or game deciding play? You let it go and let a team advance in the playoffs because they cheated?

February 4, 200818 yr If anyone felt a breeze from the west, that was Chase exhaling when the Giants held the Pats after that penalty. Although I'm not sure, I don't think it was Chase's fault...
February 4, 200818 yr I don't think it was classless, if they allowed it, it was smart. It shouldn't be that way is all I'm saying. You make a good point. I am like you in that I can't believe they allowed it.

I let my extreme dislike for Belicheck and Tom Brady get into it :thumb:. I agree that it was a good move. I just don't think that it should have been alowed. JMO

It was smart, while you may not agree with the rule, it was the right thing for NE to throw the red flag. It was a very heads up play.
