We have been carrying Elliott Co for years, not on a weekly basis like we do East and West, but we have always carried the Elliott games with East and West, the All-A Tourney and a couple of other games of interest like district games when possible. Rick Mays is Rick Mays, whether he has a team that is awful or a team that is great. He has always kept his varsity players to a minimum (many times out of necessity) and has always tried to keep his big minute guys to 7 or 8, win or lose. Should he now change his ways after 27 years just because he might ruffle some feathers?

 

Yes, he is blowing teams out and some feel he should play his subs some more and yes, there are times when other coaches feel like he is exacting revenge for those "lean" years. But I honestly don't think Rick is trying to embarrass anyone. Rick is all about kids and he wouldn't do that to kids. I didn't perceive a "run it up" attitude last night. Coach Webb didn't say anything negative about Coach Mays or his players in the post game (on or off the air).

 

Rick Mays is Rick Mays, with a great team or a terrible team. He just happens to have a great team right now and I think there are a lot of jealous people out there. When a team is winning against everyone in the region, then the fans of 15 other teams tend to band together and make some strange allies against them. Remember a few years ago when Rose Hill was dominating the region? Mortal enemies were joining together to bash Mayo, Dawson and the gang.

 

With that said, while I may not agree with everything Rick does, I respect the fact that he has been in this game for 27 years and in many of those years won very few games. I also respect the fact that he has been consistent in his approach to the game for 27 years. I don't think Rick does what he does to embarrass anyone or "exact revenge." I have had the opportunity to talk to Rick quite a bit this season, he is having fun with this team. As he said in an interview earlier this season, "These boys are making my last years at Elliott Co very enjoyable....I'm having a good time."

Not trying to score 100, then how about hold the ball with 50 seconds left instead of driving to the basket. As for West not taking their starters out, it would be kind of Dumb for Webb to put in his JV against Elliotts starters now wouldn't it. Also, 45 points, 47 points 50 points what is the difference, blowout= blowout, get the other boys in the game.

Bogeyman, I wasn't stating that Elliott wasn't much better than West Carter. I do believe that they aren't 50 points better is what i'm saying. The game should have been 30 points tops, West Carter was terrified of Elliott and just simply quit, and Elliotts players continued to play hard as they should. Elliott would have beaten almost any team in the state last night, but West Carter simply played horrible outside of the turnovers. What about not getting on the floor, not fighting through screens, not seeing the floor, not boxing out, not even attempting to denying the post?? These things Elliott had nothing to do with, granted they do get on the floor, they do come off screens quickly and shoot even quicker, the Faulkers are a nightmare posting up guards, and the whole team hits the boards well. These are the little things that make a game go from blowout to full on embarrassment, if West had attempted to do these things, which take no extreme talent just heart, and still got beaten by 50, then the whole game wouldn't be so bad.

I'm not jealous of Elliott, actually it is nice to see such a small, non-traditional power at the top of the region. The players have worked hard and deserve success, and the players for the most part are pretty likeable and easy to root for. I'd be the last person to be jealous of them, all I'm saying is that it's a long season, and I would rather have everyone healthy for the tournaments than beat teams by 50 points in January. And what happens if the well goes dry in Sandy Hook in a few years and the stronger area teams decide to humiliate them at every chance??? Would you blame them?? As for the conditioning, i can see where you would want to extend the starters minutes, but at the cost of what??? Is it more important to have a little more conditioning or have all of your players for March??

Elliott is getting ready to make a run at the State tournament and they need to be ready, regardless of what everyone thinks about running up the score.

Exactly!!!:ylsuper: I appreciate a good post such as yours. It's a shame that others don't have the same insight as you and many others do (see GoRadio's comment, [Great comment, by the way]).

 

Some people make big quotes that make them look less than intelligent. They type a lot of words about running up scores and about coaches that have coached 27 years not knowing as much about basketball as they do. As great as it must read to them when they type this stuff, it's just not all that great and never proves any point to someone that knows a little about the game.

Yes, Mason County should have plenty of Subs. They are a school I would guess about 2000 or 3000. Elliott County has 300 students. Like I said we could dip down to our Elementary schools or just let the girls team join forces with our boy's team. Our younger players are playing. Elliott's bench consists of 2 seniors, I believe a junior and 2 freshman. We start 4 juniors and a freshman. Who would you like them to play?

How would you know if someone knew more about basketball than someone else?? Is there some new standardized test or something?? I don't think anyone writes any of their post to impress you or anyone else, so what if my post are long. My advice to you would be dont read them then. This message board is to dicuss each INDIVIDUAL'S thoughts on the game, which I will do. I dont need your opinion on my thoughts. This thread is the first time i have ever commented about Elliott running up the score, which they do when possible, whether you want to admit it or not. Your opinion is just that, your opinion. My defense is they don't have anyone else to play and rather than hurting your or anyone else's feelings. Elliott is trying to get ready for the postseason. I guarantee you if Elliott pressed the entire game and tried, so hard just as you said then the game would have been a 70 point win. The majority of the wins would be alot larger blowouts than they were. In the West Carter game it was 48-17 at halftime. From your point of view, bench everyone then at halftime. If Elliott's starters only play half a game they will not be ready to compete in the state tournament.
