1) Clemens was approached twice by Mitchell to discuss the allegations that McNamee and Mitchell published in his report. Clemens declined to meet and discuss these.

 

2) When asked why they should trust McNamee, Mitchell said that anything he said would not be used against him...UNLESS they find out he lied about it.

I think this hearing is going quite well....Selig is handling it pretty good IMO.

The thing that many fail to realize is this: HGH and these other performance enhancing drugs are a problem of our society as a whole and not just a baseball or sports problem.

 

In some instances according to testimony given today under oath, it is believed if taken in the right dosages that HGH can be considered almost a "miracle" drug because of the way it can quickly heal the body. Many people take HGH for this reason alone, to quickly heal their injuries.

Just think, these are the folks conducting the investigation. I wonder who she thought, was using the stadium, when she drove by....Oh My.

When I heard her say that I, almost, ran off of the road from laughing so hard. I wondered why they couldn't screen the committee members? Sheesh. Get someone that knows baseball. :irked: Eh, that's our tax dollars at work.

For #1, Clemens contends that they didn't respond because they ASSUMED that it was the Grimsley comments from the previous year. What happens when we assume everyone?

For #2, that's what I've been saying all along. Mitchell said they talked to him 3 times and the 3rd time was just to re-read all of his comments to see if they were exactly correct. Also, each time they reminded him that all they wanted was the truth and what the ramifications would be if he was caught in a lie. Mitchell was waiting for this softball question and he jumped all over it. Also, the people that HAVE come forward proves that he was right about quite a bit of it...why should we doubt any of the rest of it?

True. Fehr did state that on the way to the hearing that he picked up a magazine, don't remember which, and it had an add for HGH in it. It was for the older folks, still an add for HGH and how it can make you "younger".

I'm pretty much fed up with the whole thing. The owners knew it was going on way back when and they kept their silence. Now here we are with Congress (which is a joke) involved, and parties from both sides are still keeping their mouths shut. The greatest game in the world has screwed itself.

Yes there is plenty of blame on either side but the Players must also carry, their portion of this burden. The desire to excel is a temptation to many but not all, have crossed to the dark side and walked down that alley, of performance enhancements.

 

While these hearings are going on, does anyone believe either side will be willing to work toward a clean system or will it take, an agency to step in and mandate it.

I agree with you Strike3. I'm just tired of the whole thing. The players definitely have to shoulder their share of the blame. I do believe that the sides will come to some type of an agreement since everyone has seen what happens when others feel the need to get involved.

How do you fix the current problems within MLB without knowing about and dealing with the problems of the past?

 

My gripe has to do with Congress' involvement, as they surely have better things to do. You have Congressmen/women who probably couldn't recognize a baseball from a hockey puck making statements and decisions about matters they aren't equipped to deal with. But the fact of the matter is that MLB was very slow and ineffective in dealing with their own problems and gave Congress the opening to stick their nose in where it shouldn't be.

 

They have fixed the current problems by putting in the rough penalaties they have now for taking steroids. I am tired of hearing all this stuff about the past. Its almost IMPOSSIBLE to prove anything on anyone, unless they just come out and admit they did it now. One of these times we are probably going to ruin someone's reputation just because someone who didn't like that person said that they took it. So unless they can completely prove someone did something, then there is no reason for anything to go public. Just by going with someones word is not good enough to damage someone reputation. Unless they actually start proving stuff, then I don't want to hear anything more about it. The best thing baseball could do IMO is just move on, and make sure nothing like this happens again.

The problems really do not continue to this day, or definitely not as much. With now the fear of the punishment they could get. As for what I seen with the Mitchell report there is no way they can actually prove anything, unless someone just admits to actually doing it themselves. Its really all a bunch of people just saying that person did, and people denying it. The longer this goes on, the more and more people its going to aggrevate and probably make baseball lose some fans. I mean they have done a good job at realizing that there was a problem, and they have put something in place now to try to make sure steroids dont exist in baseball, and now if someone uses it they will pay the price. So I dont know how it is doing the game of baseball any good, talking about all the problems they had, and not being able to prove any of it though.

 

I also think its really crazy for congress to be involved in it now. I could understand them getting involved to make sure baseball put a penalty in place for taking steroids. However I think its a waste for congress to be using any of its time trying to find out stuff about the past when there is no way to prove much of anything.
