January 16, 200818 yr The problems really do not continue to this day, or definitely not as much. With now the fear of the punishment they could get. As for what I seen with the Mitchell report there is no way they can actually prove anything, unless someone just admits to actually doing it themselves. Its really all a bunch of people just saying that person did, and people denying it. The longer this goes on, the more and more people its going to aggrevate and probably make baseball lose some fans. I mean they have done a good job at realizing that there was a problem, and they have put something in place now to try to make sure steroids dont exist in baseball, and now if someone uses it they will pay the price. So I dont know how it is doing the game of baseball any good, talking about all the problems they had, and not being able to prove any of it though. I also think its really crazy for congress to be involved in it now. I could understand them getting involved to make sure baseball put a penalty in place for taking steroids. However I think its a waste for congress to be using any of its time trying to find out stuff about the past when there is no way to prove much of anything. And you were expecting what? Surveillance videotape of players using steroids? Despite what you may see on CSI, the most common type of evidence is eyewitness testimony. Credibility of the testimony certainly comes into play and such is the case in this instance. But since we're talking about people illegally using drugs, you most likely aren't going to get witness testimony from a priest. Please - baseball most certainly did not do "a good job at realizing that there was a problem" until the problem had become monumental and out of control. It was their utter lack of appreciating the severity of the problem and then not effectively dealing with it that has put them in the very place they now find themselves - having their organization reviewed by a government body that shouldn't be doing so. And if dragging a few skeletons out of the closet causes them to lose a few fans along the way, so be it. They brought it on themselves. There are consequences to actions (or inactions, as the case may be) and they are only now getting what they have deserved for a long time.

Allowing chemically-enhanced cheaters to become rich, idolized, and unchallenged only increases the likelihood that young kids desiring to be sports stars of the future will emulate the actions of these professional athletes and destroy their bodies in the process.

If they would just take care of the pharm. companies that distribute and produce the roids that would be a more simple solution then all these witch hunts. Which I realize in some cases witches are present.

Which I realize in some cases witches are present. They are illegal if taken without a prescription, not illegal in and of themselves (such as heroin).
January 17, 200818 yr I guess I agree with Congress holding these hearings for the reasons listed above--about the spread into college and high school athletics--although I'm not sure what THEY will or can do anything about it. However, would it kill the congressmen and congresswomen to at least have a staffer do a little bit of research so they can at least ACT like they know what they're talking about. Some quotes from the hearings: "Commissioner Selig"..... pronounced SELL-IC "Rafael Palmery" and his "three-HUNDREDTH hit"... The infamous "1919 BLACKHAWKS scandal"... And who could forget the last Congressional hearing and these: "Mike McGwire"... "Sammy Sosa"...pronounce Sammy Sue-ser Morons!
