January 6, 200818 yr Sen. McConnell has been running ads sense I believe the day after election day - and he aired another ad or two during UK vs. U of L this afternoon. Leads me to ask the question: Which democrat is going to jump in the race and help get rid of him? I am putting my money on State Auditor Crit Luallen or as some have speculated Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo. I am sticking with Luallen though. She has the voice, experience, and ideas that can give some credibility back to the office that McConnell has soiled with partisanship and a resistance to standing up to failed leadership.
January 6, 200818 yr I don't think it will much matter. McConnell is a money machine, and makes no bones about it (see link). And if someone would happen to be running close, there's no one more skilled at getting down and dirty from the advertising perspective. http://www.slate.com/id/2063839/

If it wasn't so funny, I'd probably get irritated with your post. You accusing someone of partisanship. Please. Hope there's not a mirror nearby.

Well, it seems he has stood up to Peluso and Reid quite well.
January 6, 200818 yr I think McConnell is sticking his foot in his mouth enough that he might be a little weaker. The money machine will be hard to overcome though.
January 6, 200818 yr It would be very difficult for any Democrat to beat McConnell even without Obama or Hillary at the top of the national ticket. With a liberal presidential candidate on the ballot, McConnell will cruise back into office.
January 6, 200818 yr I don't think any reasonable dem (either one of them ) wants to go up against Mitch. He's going to be a bear to beat with his money and organization.
January 6, 200818 yr And honestly, KY would be nuts to vote him out of office. With the power and leadership position he holds, KY gets things as a result of it, that they wouldn't get with a new Senator.
January 6, 200818 yr Luallen has already said she isn't running. Just can't raise that much money so quickly. Two names I'm hearing are Bruce Lunsford and Lt. Col. Andrew Horne.

He has been there a long time and has power and influence that it would take a junior senator decades to achieve.

That's what I've heard as well. I really don't see McConnell being challenged this election. As mcpapa pointed out, his campaign is swimming in money and he has a powerful political machine that will be hard to overcome. Barring a major gaffe or controversy he will probably only face token opposition.
January 7, 200818 yr Author While it's no question that McConnell is going to be hard to beat - it's not impossible at all. Just ask former Sen. Tom Daschle what experience and huge warchests mean when an electorate is ready for change. The problem with beating McConnel is there are not a lot of democrats with the name recognition to beat him. Lunsford would be a wash. Horne doesnt have the name recognition at this point. Chandler is not going to run til 2010. Clooney can't win in the more conservative parts of the state.
January 7, 200818 yr I fully expect McConnell to win. I'd vote for B. L. Zeebub before him, but I still expect him to win.
January 7, 200818 yr If John Yarmuth can beat Ann Northrup, I believe there must be a contender who could beat McConnell. I just don't know who it is.
January 7, 200818 yr The best strategy to beat McConnell is to get clips of his stupid remarks and play them over and over. That would work for Bunning too.
