While it's no question that McConnell is going to be hard to beat - it's not impossible at all. Just ask former Sen. Tom Daschle what experience and huge warchests mean when an electorate is ready for change.

 

The problem with beating McConnel is there are not a lot of democrats with the name recognition to beat him. Lunsford would be a wash. Horne doesnt have the name recognition at this point. Chandler is not going to run til 2010. Clooney can't win in the more conservative parts of the state.

 

I don't know about the Daschle comparison. He became very liberal in a conservative state. McConnell has stayed conservative in a conservative state.

I've always had mixed feelings about wanting to 'knock off' a long term Senator or Congressman. As a right wing 'wingnut', I enjoy that both of my current Senators are also conservative Republicans. However, if Harry Reid, or Tom Daschle (or Nancy Pelosi was our Congressman) were our Senators in Kentucky and either or both had high ranking status, it would be sort of foolish to want them gone. These high ranking guys in congress carry alot of weight and can bring our district and state alot of good things that a regular first or second term Senator or Congressman could never do. I understand the gamesmanship in wanting to go after McConnell simply so he can spend money that he can't transfer to other Republican causes, but knocking off a high ranking member in your own state just doesn't make alot of sense to me...

Ken Lucas put self-imposed term limits on himself. Davis ended up reelected. When Lucas tried to come back, Davis had built up a good reputation and defeated him. My belief, Lucas never leaves office with the self-imposed term limit and he is still in office.
