What I really find the oddest about the whole thing! Why would you even care what one person thinks? Highlands made some great accomplishments this year. We all no that.

No problem. As Henry mentioned, Collinsworth did not pay to have any practice facility built. Cris and some others led the drive to get the artificial turf placed down on the main football field. Through his connections, we were able to get the field installed for a discounted price. He and others solicited money from business and individuals in the community to jump start the project. He may have made a monetary donation, but most of the money raised to pay for the field improvements came from other donations and loans. But please don't misinterpret that as minimizing Cris' role in making it and other things at the school happen. He and Holly have been fantastic supporters of the school system with not only their financial support but with their time and energy.

Nah, it wasn't a stupid question. Crunch probably thought you were kidding around as it has been mentioned on this site a bunch of times that Cris lives in Ft. Thomas and Austin is his son. But based on your relatively low number of sites, my guess is that you haven't been on here much. I'm sure Crunch meant no offense.

2. Kentucky football is on the rise...look at the schools some of these kids are commiting to. There is a lot of talent in the state of Kentucky!

A would say that most states do not have that many high school football players who receive D1 football scholarships. There just are not that many D1 scholarships available. Plus, you have to fit a certain mold for D1 scholarships, if your are an offensive lineman you have to be 6'5", not that you can't be a good linemen if you 6'3", it is just very hard to get a D1 scholarship as an OL if you are not at least 6'5". RB are the same way, if you can't post a 4.4 40, then you have an up hill battle. And remember, if you want a D1 scholarship, you are competing against every player who plays your position in the country. Think about how many QB's there are in the state of Kentucky, 220. Then look at all the QB's in the country, and divide that number by the number of D1 schools.

If a player wants a football scholarship and is a decent player, they can get a college football scholarship. There is not any shame in getting a scholarship to a D1AA, D2, D3, or NAIA school. Even if you get one of these scholarships you are in the top 10% of high school football players. Plus, you still get a college education, at least partially, paid for, and get to play a great sport at a level that most people do not get the opportunity to play at. I think that many people look down upon a D2 or NAIA scholarship, but depending upon the young man, that particular D2 school may be the best choose for that player, and he may very happy attending that school.

 

As for the quality of football in the state of Kentucky, I think Kentucky High School Football is on the rise, and has improved greatly. Many more players are getting football scholarships now then 5 or 10 years ago. Now, I speak of North-Eastern Kentucky because I am from there. But I would submit that if more player form North-Eastern Kentucky are getting scholarships, then more players from around the state are getting scholarships. Now they are mostly D2, D3, and NAIA, but as I previously stated, I think there isn't any shame in that. Conversely, I believe it is a great honor for the young players, and a great motivation to the seniors to be.

One that really really irks me about being left off of atleast Honorable Mention is Prestonsburg's Allen Craynon. Craynon finished the season with 2004 yards in 13 games to go along with 27 Touchdowns. All the the while he was splitting carries with fellow Junior Seth Setser who had 944 yards and 11 TDs himself. While all of the kids that made the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams are definitely worthy, I don't see how you leave a kid off of HM with stats like Craynon's. I think anyone that played Pburg this year or saw them play will agree that this kid is a player and deserved to be on it. Especially when you have a kid on there that has 1262 less yards then Allen does. Absolute joke!

I can make the argument that Cecil is deserving at the qb spot. Just when was it has decided that a qb has to throw the ball for 3,000 yards to be the all state qb? His contributions running the ball were just as valuable and impressive as Stein's passing the ball. And Cecil did complete over 60% of the passes he attempted, so it's not like he can't pass the ball.

 

Any number of Highlands O linemen should have been on the team. If you want me to name one, I'd go with either Stine or Hempfling as they have the body size that people naming all state teams erroneously get fixated on when they make the selections. What I find the most interesting about no Highlands O linemen being on there was the fact that Highlands made no bones about the fact that they were going to run the ball right down everyone's throat. Teams regularly put 8 in the box, they tried every stunt scheme known, they did everything they could to shut down Highland running game, and NO ONE did it (although Central came the closest and did it for 3 quarters). Which should tell folks making these selections just how good the Highlands O line was this year.

 

At the lber spot, again you could go with Stine, Ball, Fitzgerald or Hurtt. Because Highlands doesn't keep track of tackles, there isn't that stat for the selectors to rely on I admit, but those guys shut down almost every running back thrown at them (including one that made the all state team). And heck, I'd put Conner ahead of Israel at the rb spot based on the head to head matchup this year. Don't get me wrong, Shane is a good running back, but his most impressive year was his sophomore year when every D was focusing on Burke and not him.

 

Collinsworth did a great job shutting down or severly limiting some of the best receivers in the state this year. Guy didn't hurt us, Moore didn't hurt us, the two receivers on Trotwood's team that got D1 scholarships didn't hurt us. Detmer, Dixie's very good receiver, didn't hurt us. I doubt there are very few, if any, defensive backs that played against the level of receivers that Collinsworth and had as much success as he did.

Having said all that, I find it extremely impressive that we accomplished what we did, in the way we did, without, in the eyes of the Herald Leader, a single person worthy of its team. I think it may speak even more as to the way the Highlands kids played as a team. The Herald Leader's list seems to focused on the players that will make a contribution at the D1 level, as opposed to who were the best high school players. I've always had a problem with that focus as it puts an emphasis on size and what they may do in college over what they actually accomplished in high school against good competition.

 

 

I'll ask a question back at you, don't you find it a bit unusual that a team that goes 15-0 and convincingly wins the state championship in the second largest class didn't have a sole on the Herald Leader's team?

LN, my fellow friend, you did not mention the energy mustered in one outstanding footballer, Austin! Austin came on strong in Spring ball and never looked back. He will be a force on offense and defense the next three years. Also, Katie Collinsworth was named to The Enquirer's Soccer All-Star Team as a first team soccer player! In fact, there are two more Collinsworth siblings waiting in the wings who will be a force on the Highlands sports beat in years to come.
