December 10, 200718 yr Being that Highlands supporter, please allow me to respond. If don't think that some kids and coaches work harder than others, then you must feel that all teachers work as hard as one another and are equally committed to teaching. Do you think that is the case? If so, you'll be the first teacher that has ever told me that (and I have a sister who is a retired teacher and a brother who currently teaches). Your answer? Let me say it this way, some schools outwork the state championship teams just to be able to make the playoffs. You take a team like an Augusta in basketball. They make work their tails off and make the regional tournament working harder than any other team in the state. Just cause you win the state title, DOES NOT MEAN that you are the hardest working team in the state. It just means you worked hard AND had talent. What is the old saying... Hard work beats talent that does not work hard. I would add... Talent that works hard is going to be straight hard work. Congrats to Highlands for their 17th title. That is pretty impressive and a testament to all those young men, coaches and parents over the past years.
December 10, 200718 yr Don't all schools have the ability to accept tuition students? Ability and it meaning anything is not the same thing. Mom and pops grocery store has the opportunity to compete against Walmart. Does not mean they can.

December 10, 200718 yr Just curious but were all the football title games decided by schools that are either a) private or b) independent?
December 10, 200718 yr Of course they are placing greater emphasis on football. We need a tackle, a guard, a split end. Those are emphasis that a public school cannot venture in. Guys lets look at the whole here. I bought a program this weekend and was scanning down it at previous state champs. Look at X and Trinty, count them up. Just look over the last 15 seasons in all classes at how many private schools where either champs or runner-up. Enough said! Now in saying that, Highlands put a very talented football team out this, probably the best in the state or atleast second best. 6A spoke for itself in that final game. LCA and Newport played very well also. Numbers dont lie. I'm not sure what you mean by the bolded part. Are you implying that a private school looks at their players and says "we need a tackle, guard or split end for next year, lets go recruit one"? If so, what evidence to you have to back that up.

And thanks for acknowledging that some kids/coaches out work other kids and coaches. Seems like you are one of the few people on here that are willing to admit that fact. As for Augusta, I'd be willing to bet that if basketball was to be divided into classes like football is (and I fully support that idea by the way as you know) my guess is that Augusta's hard work would result in them getting much deeper in the tournament than is the case currently. I agree that talent is a needed component to winning state. But you can't convince me that a school the size of Henderson doesn't have a lot of very talented athletes in it. The Henderson folks made a mistake years ago hiring Duffy. His approach of having the "thin thirty" worked at Danville and to some extent at Highlands. But his philosophy just does not work playing teams like X and T where you have to have depth to compete with them, so even if the Henderson thirty kids worked just as hard as X or T, they still weren't going to win with only 30 something kids on the team. Heck, as hard as the Highlands kids work and as talented as our kids are, they have a hard time competing with the X's, T's and Elder's of the world because of the depth disadvantage ( through my law practice, I know lots of Elder folks and they look at our off season conditioning and practice schedule and admit that they don't put in the time that we do). But that's no excuse for the big public schools with 800-1000 boys. Bottom line is that to compete with X and T you must have a lot of boys to draw from; you must have a coach that can get them to come out and play; you must have very good coaches from an x's and o's standpoint; you must have coaches that put a whole lot of time into coaching the team but still find the time to watch and get involved in the youth leagues; you must have kids and coaches willing to give up their summers and off season getting better for next year; and you must have a fan base committed to supporting the football program because X and T have all of those things. Are there many 6A public schools that have all of those things? Not that I'm aware of. But you can't blame X and T and should not penalize them for that.
December 10, 200718 yr Great Point!! I'm glad the namesake of your moniker (or whatever its called) didn't have the same outlook as you do or a whole lot of the values we enjoy due to the ancient Greeks might have a more Persian slant.

I think and truly believe that the biggest advantages that schools like Highlands, X, T, LCA, Beechwood, NCC, LC, etc, etc have is that they have a community that 1) knows and understands the commitment it takes; 2) is willing to make that commitment; 3) financially can afford to make that commitment.
December 10, 200718 yr Ability and it meaning anything is not the same thing. Mom and pops grocery store has the opportunity to compete against Walmart. Does not mean they can. But at one point wasn't Sam Walton first store just a Mom and Pop place and he made it into something bigger and better with just plain old hard work? My point is, that the Wal*mart stores that we know today, didn't just happen overnight but took a lot of hard work for years and years to evolve into what they are today....

I think many schools supporters like Highlands, X, T, and the lot are frustrated that there are some schools that can afford to make the committment(#3), fail to live up to the first 2, but still complain about an unfair advantage.

EXACTLY!!! Those are the schools I don't feel sorry for...

That may be true, but should they be advocating separating those that do from the competition and in effect lowering the bar? Is that what this country has come to?

My point is, that the Wal*mart stores that we know today, didn't just happen overnight but took a lot of hard work for years and years to evolve into what they are today.... There are also a lot of rules and regulations that Walmart has to abide by and protects the mom and pop stores. Walmart lost millions in an antitrust lawsuit several years back with what is called "predatory pricing" where they were pricing their products below cost in the hopes of stealing away the mom and pop customers and running them out of business and not providing fair competition. You could say that the government protects mom and pop stores and "levels the playing field" between them and Walmart. But that doesn' happen in real life, does it?
