I think I saw the Walton team play at the little deamon classic last season 11/u agaist richmond. It was a great game. They were very talented and came from like 12 down in the last 2 minutes to win.

I think if you have the talent to compete DI, you should. The kids will get alot better playing that caliber of compition and it is about the kids getting better, not winning every game. We are DII because we do not have a post player but if we had one we would go DI . All of our kids are in 2 classrooms in one hall. I felt like we had the 3rd best team in the DII state last season... we lost to the ville by single digits in the semis plus we had beaten somerset and wayne co(team Access) during the year. We may let our kids (2 GUARDS) play elsewhere this season so they can compete at the DI level.

 

Actually, this is where we really disagree. Playing DI vs. DII is about how your team is derived. This becomes even more true as the team gets older. I do agree that is about kids getting better, but how do they get better by getting beat by 20 to 30 points.

 

The U12 coach has told me that he will make his decision on whether to play D1 or D2 at the end of February. I think they could compete at times, but their bench is not strong enough to carry them over the hump.

We have their point guard. The other kid from Walton just moved there this year.

We play the 12/u wolfpack saturday. We are playing with our school team, trying to get ready for the 6th grade state. We start 3 5th graders so we may struggle but I had rather get beat 10 then win by 30.

I really don't think we disagree, if you are competitive you should play up but if you can't you are better off playing down. It does you no good to get hammered or do the hammering. Competitve competition is what helps you raise the level of your game.

I try to keep up with this thread, but I have a question, are the Firehawks better than last year? No offense to the team whatsoever, just curious if they added, perhaps I missed that. They were in our pool last year at state.

 

I will agree with Boomer, they lack a really good shooter. They picked up Ben Racke this year and he is solid down low, goes around 6'1 and is thick. I would think they still are a better team than last year.

I agree. You should play where you are the most competitive. What NKY teams do play Div I?

 

I have a friend who's son plays for the U11 Hornets and they played Div I and I believe finished 2nd.

The hornets played D1, the Tarheels play D1, The main thing about playing D1 is having a very good player at each spot and some quality depth. Most local teams can't accomplish that.

Lake Cumberland is the team that won the 2nd grade AAU state last year and they have 4-5 4th graders added. They are from somerset (Southwestern).

 

Actually 4 are from Pulaski and I think 5 are from Southwestern. I think 3 of them are 4th graders.

Just found out from our coach that our point guard will not be able to make the tournament this weekend in Lexington due to a school make-up game. They should be alright with either Moeves or Geiman running the point.

D1 teams usually consist of all star teams where kids are drawn from not just one or two cities but various. That is unless the talent pool is exceptional or you are in a major METRO area like Louisville/Lexington. I can think of 8 kids from NKY right now in 13U that I would like to put together and take downstate for a D1 tourney but the logistics behind that would probably be difficult.

The Tarheels are from NKY in name only. They have 1 kid who is from Wilmington, OH and last year had 2 kids from Louisville. Their U12 team has 3 kids who were held back 2 years ago as 5th graders. The Hornets are a true community team (Northern Campbell County) who probably will play D1.

 

The other thing about playing D1 is coaching. You need a coach who understands the game, has strong game management skills and doesn't have a problem with not playing everyone on the team.

 

Many D2 teams lack not only the players, but alot of times a quality coach who can coach at that level. I mean coach, not complain about calls, but actually coach their team to success. Making adjustments, exploiting weaknesses and getting the ball into the hands of your scorer when the other team is trying to keep the ball out of that player's hands.

Lake cumberland is a very nice team with all of the parts. They will be a tough game for anyone in the 10/u, reguardless of age or school affiliation. I think lex cath is made up of AAU players from different teams around lexington. They will be very good in the 12/u division. The 11/u division is loaded except for the ville and the legends not participating. I do not know much about the 9/u's and very little about the rest of the 10's.
