Boomer72, Dave, has taken over Sports of All Sorts, at Turfway. Dave, should have some great tournaments in the near future.

 

Dave, will not turn any team a way. He will work with anyone, if you need a place to play BCI's, the place.

 

 

BCI is only the place when nothing else is available. Unfortunately, they have the WORST refs in the area. Most of their refs AREN'T high school certified and typically want to tell you how great of refs they are. Our coach only plays there when nothing else is going on. Dave's a nice guy - but he needs to clean up the ref problem.

I thought Dave was a heckuva nice guy who runs the tournaments well. I didnt realize they used refs though for those games as the last time we played we got mauled everytime down the floor with no call. I would plead my case and the refs just looked at me like they were deaf and couldnt hear. LOL

 

I had to call a timeout 2 minutes into the game and literally tell my kids to pull,push, hang, do whatever you have to do to stop them from driving or shooting because the refs are not going to call anything. It actually made our kids get more physical and turned into a football match but at that point the $100 was spent and it was the first game of the tournament.

What I hate, is to pay $200.00 to $395.00 and basically get the same type refs and calls. I've seen and coached games at the KBA, and other places that were ref as bad. They, were certified with all their patch's. AAU national had a lot of high school and small college refs, they were inconstant and made horrible calls at times.

 

$100.00 can't hardly fill your gas tank and get you something to eat at a restaurant. It can get you 3 games or more at Dave's place.

I don't know the guys name, but I know who is handles that part of the gig. Dave has the final say so on all refs though.

Just to clear up - being inconsistent or making bad calls is one thing. Being arrogant and flippant towards parents, coaches and players is what I'm talking about. It is a ridiculous standard that has been allowed to fester at the BCI. That's what makes the ref'ing bad, because then they do what they want and feel there is no repurcussions. As well, they talk smack to parents, players and coaches.

Nah, I didn't mean to sound like it was an argument between you and me. That is just one issue that makes me boil - BCI refs! That is the one thing Dave needs to take control of!

Just like anywhere else, you have good and bad. I was watching a few high school games last week and saw some of the same refs who work some of the BCI games, a few were some of the better refs at BCI and are good high school refs, but one, one was the worse, and it showed in that high school game he was reffing.

 

Talk to Dave, if enough complain about a certain ref or two maybe something will be done about it. But, I wonder how deep the ref pool is?

TOTALLY unacceptable! A ref should not get into the jawing back and forth with parents or coaches! They shouldn't have rabbit ears.

Refereeing is a tough gig and I will never get a chance to see how tough but I agree with the fact that they should not even communicate with fans/parents, etc. Dont even look at them, acknowledge them or anything. You call the game and block everything else out. I have also heard that the top referees in the area refuse to do AAU ball because they think the parents/coaches are crazy and they dont want to subject themselves to that atmosphere. Do I think they have a case? I don't know. I have seen a lot of good AAU clubs who have excellent respectful fans and coaches. I have also seen some of the worst fans/coaches and felt sorry for the kids after games that they had to go home to those situations or play for those types of coaches. I just thought I would throw that in because that was straight from the mouth of one of the top refs in 9th region. So maybe Dave's hands are tied with what he can get, I dont know.

I have ref'd close to 100 games in the past 3 years. Mostly AAU, some middle school stuff. I mainly have done it to help out. I would never choose to be a ref because I would not be able to handle the questioning of calls or the complaining by fans, however, that is a part of basketball. So if you are a ref and can't handle those things, you shouldn't ref. Every profession/hobby has it's pluses and minuses. It's too bad that some (not all) ref's choose to use their position as referee to antagonize coaches, player and parents with their ranting and jawing. I bet I could guess one of the ref's in HoopDr's post about the ref'ing at Summitview.

 

On the flip side of that, I was at the XU beat down of Virginia last night. A ref made a horrible call against VA that brought the entire coaching staff up off the bench. Not one of those 3 refs on the floor even acknowledged the coaching staff, they focused on the game between the lines. Several times Sean Miller was jawing at the ref's. Not once did a ref spend more than 3 seconds acknowledging his displeasure. While college refs make 10 to 20 times more than an AAU/High school ref, there is a reason why they are at that level. If you talk to a college/semi pro ref, they will tell you they are taught to not acknowledge any fan or non-head coach who is not on the floor.

 

That one principle should be practiced by all ref's regardless. A parent or non-head coach should never be removed from a game unless they physically attack someone. But too many times, ref's get caught up in flexing their muscle and ruin a perfectly good game. That's why I believe in getting up quick on a team and keeping your foot on the pedal as a coach. That way the ref's are in no way involved in the outcome of a game.

Some of those "top" referees have to deal with the crazy coaches/fans of the 9th and 10th region whose antics are worse than any AAU coach or parent/fan.

 

I see some of the same refs at 9th and 10th region games doing AAU games. I think the real reason why some ref's won't do AAU is because of money. A high school game pays double or triple what an AAU game pays. The ref's who have seniority get scheduled more for high school games, so they don't need to do AAU. The newer guys who want to make money have to do AAU and middle school ball. That's the real reason.
