Kind of funny! This comment is on the Girls Basketball forum, I guess girls basketball was interesting enough to read, at the very least, this forum.

Girls opening night no one covering the games. Scores on page 3 the stories about the games were called in by the schools.

 

Not to reveal your age but werent you also upset when the ADI didnt cover the sinking of the Titantic? :laugh:

Why do you never see MLS scores in the paper? No one cares. Or should I say, not enough people care.

Unfortunately, 98 is right on the money. If you can't put butts in the seats, don't expect coverage in the papers.

Today's Enquirer in the sports section has stories on:

Ricky Williams and the Miami Dolphins, who in Cincy cares about this?

The Patriots activating Troy Brown, who cares in Cincy?

It has a score of Memphis beating Austin Peay, who cares?

There is a blurb about Colorade State's football team. I mean really which does the NKY/Cincy crowd care more about. Girls bball or Colorado State college football.

 

ON the 3rd page of the paper, there is a story about the last 5 quarters coming out. How many papers is that selling?

They are covering a story on the FRENCH POLICE. Where are the pockets in our area that this is aimed at?

 

I think you get my point. THe newspaper is full of stories that no one cares about. French police or Colorado STATE football.

I agree that girls basketball will never be able to compete fanwise with boys basketball, but some good coverage in the paper might spur more interest in area girls basketball - at least it couldn't hurt. Also the Independent doesn't have much competition from other news sources in the area. Its not like they will lose sales from printing additional girls b'ball articles. Saying it is a lack of staff problem is a cop-out because I know that some nights there are no other area sports teams being reported on, and there are still no reporters at girls events.

Local news is expensive to cover, unfortunately, and that's why the "lesser" sports often get short shrift. At smaller papers, the reporters and photographers can only be so many places at once.

 

To clarify, however, AP and other wire services are NOT free. Papers pay a rather expensive monthly rate to subscribe to those services.

I have seen the Community Press and NKY.com offer scholarships for student reporters. Get some of the student’s involved, great experience and a nice resume builder!

Actually we could all do better ourselves. While we can't control the newspapers we could post more info about the games and I am one of the most guilty offenders. I usually will cover seven or eight games a month as well as several boys games for my website and it would be easy to take five minutes and post a short summary on this message board. I will try to do better this year but sometimes I am guilty of being a "free rider" and just cruise the site for info and not give anything back.

We will be covering girls basketball on my radio show. We will have Coach Ashley rosen from Walton & Coach Holly Roberts from Gallatin on the show this weekend.
