Those stories come from the AP (or another news agency) they didn't have to send (i.e.pay) a reporter.

 

The schools call in the score and the papers can get a story with a 3-minute interview about the game.

Local news is expensive to cover, unfortunately, and that's why the "lesser" sports often get short shrift. At smaller papers, the reporters and photographers can only be so many places at once.

 

To clarify, however, AP and other wire services are NOT free. Papers pay a rather expensive monthly rate to subscribe to those services.

Freelancers help, and I'm sure you do a great job, but as a general rule all too often the stuff that comes in from freelancers is very poor quality. Good stringers are very hard to come by.

WSIP 98.9 in Paintsvillle, covers Johnson Central, Sheldon Clark and Paintsville girls games. Now, they don't do every game but they do alot of the games.
