Is it true what I heard? That Dick Cheney was snooping around Boom's house last night, with a couple of hound dogs and muttering something like, " I know they're in here someplace, dang it!" :irked:

I heard they soaked the powder in Woodford Reserve.

Ok, here is the story of how the Highlands Cannon came to be.

 

 

 

Long ago in a far away land, ok just kidding, back in the late 60's a crazed Highlands fan had been to a high school game where they shot off fireworks. He liked this idea and so he approached the Ft. Thomas fire marshal and told him they wanted to shoot off blue and white fireworks in Death Valley when Highlands scored. The fire marshal said no way. Well, this crazed Highlands fan doesn't take no for an answer so he kept after the fire marshal until he really became a pain in the you know what. Well, one day this fan thought he would try a different approach. So he met with the fire marshal and asked if we could fire a cannon off. The fire marshall was soo glad he didn't mention fireworks that he said OK. The next week this fan left on his travels to locate a cannon. He arrive back in the Fort on a Thursday night, painted the cannon blue and white, and fired it for the first time on Friday against Cov. Cath. in 1968. When the cannon went off for the first time, the fire marshall was shocked at the size of the cannon and how loud it was. But hey, he said we could have it.

I can't recall which state championship it was but the game was played at EKU sometime in the mid 70's and we had won the game. Another NKY team played after us possibly Bellevue and I think I recall the cannon crew firing a few rounds of after Bellevue scores . I was too young to be drinking at the time so I think the cannon has been fired off for another northern kentucky team at least once.

The year of that state championship was 1977, I was just a real young lad then (9 years old). The day was frigidly cold, but I can't remember if Bellevue was playing in the title game then (If so it would have been the Charlie and Jon Sutkamp team).

 

I do remember 1981 w/ Bellevue in the title game as well. Remember they had the cannon in the far endzone at Cardinal Stadium (open side).

That Bellevue team should be honored, because you can count on Booms loading hand how many times that Cannon has been fired off for any team other than Highlands. It was fired off for Tim Couch when he tossed his record breaking td at HHS a few years back. Now that is a trivia question for 20 yrs down the road.

Yep, you are right about that one. Highlands hung around 40 on Bill Ransdell and E'TOWN to capture their 8th state title. Awe, the memories.
