I was only 2!! I wasn't familar with what was going on yet!

Another little bit of Cannon history; the first time it was fired was in 1968 at the Highlands vs. Cov. Cath. game. It was also learned at the game that if you sit the cannon too close to closed windows, they will blow out.:lol:

 

 

Another bit of cannon history: after we won state in 75, they had a parade through town to celebrate the championship (aah, the good old days). My father, who was on the cannon crew at the time, loaded the cannon into the bed of his pick up truck and had the truck at the front of the parade. Since he was going to be in the back of the truck, he got the owner of the cannon (now my father in law) to drive the pick up truck. As the parade winded past the high school, my father decided to shoot the cannon as the truck was moving, but he "forgot" to tell the driver, whom about soiled himself when it went off. He later told me he thought the truck had exploded. The auxilary police officer at the head of the parade stopped the parade and told my father not to do it again (the police officer was not amused). They hadn't moved more than a couple of hundred yds when my father decided to shoot it again. My guess is that the police officer then just threw up his hands and said "wasted breath trying to get Bob to stop". Perhaps the most surprising part of that is the fact that years later the owner of the cannon let me marry his daughter; you'd have thought he'd remember back in 75 and said: "no way that crazy nut's son is marrying my daughter". Heck I wouldn't have blamed him for telling me no when I asked to marry his daughter.

The cannon was fired for Beechwood in the St. Lukes Bowl at Highlands. You know every once in awhile those cannon crews guys just do a super nice deed.

Yeah, it went off for Tim Couch as well when he broke the record in '95.
