I get the feeling that some on this thread would prefer a western Kentucky champion, a southwestern Kentucky champion, a Louisville champion, a northern Kentucky champion, a Lexington champion, a mountain champion and a northeastern Kentucky champion in each class. I thought we were playing for state championships. It looks like this year we have significant travel for a number of games, but I bet most of these teams are happy to be practicing on Thanksgiving and playing on the weekend. Good luck to all teams.

Who cares about 5 or 6 years ago ... you claimed the 4 best teams in 4A were on the same side ... they aren't.

 

That is not what I said. I simply said that perennially (traditionally) the 4 best teams are all in the same 1/4 of the bracket this season. Boyle Co. and Rockastle will not be down for long.

There you go. HHS, Trinity, X, Beechwood, NewCath, CovCath, Bowling Green, .... all get easy games sent there way. That's the way it's set up for the big boys to not have to play anyone too tough to win State.:laugh:

 

Why is it that a Lexington school (Henry Clay) has to play Trinity this week rather than Shelby Co, Boone Co, or St X. All 3 schools are closer to Louisville than Henry Clay is. It doesn't make sense.

I'm still for going back to the pre-1975 set up. Jefferson County's Champion was declared

state champion for the largest class from 1959-1974. If you don't mind the smaller schools, like Central, playing in the "at-large" playoffs and the occasional trip to Louisville, then that would be super. The City Champ versus the County Champ for all the marbles.....or bragging rights, rings, medallions, the trophy(which is still dwarfed by the basketball trophy), etc.....

I would argue just the opposite. It appears to be set up to let certain teams AVOID these types of teams and give some formerly less successful teams a false sense of program progress.

 

Great point Kissinger. Do you really think the likes of Highlands, Trinity, X (and the rest of the powerhouse teams) care whom they play in the second, third or fourth round? They all know that eventually they will have to beat the best teams in their region to make it to state. I was of the understanding that it was some schools that got tired of always getting beaten by the same teams in the playoffs that were behind this move, not the powerhouse teams. Is my understanding correct to the best of your knowledge?

District 6 for example has to travel for the region if both teams are the same seed it is hosted by the odd district...next year it is the even numbered, but if both are the same seed it goes to the higher numbered district...district 8...thus the winner in district six will travel if they are equal seeds.

In a way you are right. But truthfully, are there any points of reference in a sport that is reclassified every two to four years? Teams change classes, districts, etc. due to enrollment shifts. Those historical comparisons, in one opinion, are only relevant if the alignment is static. For example, there was about a 30 year period where basketball's alignment was fairly static. To me, in 2005 or so when the wholesale change was made, it sort of "resets" records and history.

 

But I will agree on one thing without a doubt. Most people don't understand it and have to check the bracket pairings regularly to be sure who they play. From a coaching standpoint though, it is great. You truly have to focus one game at a time.

 

The other thing this new system did as I observe, is make you play well in all district games. You don't think the regular season means anything? Look at some of the teams who had to play on the road this week and next.

 

Corbin won their district last year and had to travel 3 hours to play in the regional final. They won their district again this year and also get to travel 3 hours to play in the regional final.

 

I'm sure there are others in the same boat, it's just the way it worked out.

If they stick with this rotation, it will even out after the next couple of years.

That would be true under any form of rotating system. If you only make the semifinals once or twice every few years (true of most teams) then you have to rely on the luck of the draw and hope it is your turn to host in the year(s)you make it.

I thought just the basic district alignment was screwed up. I counted 5 schools not in Frankforts district that are a shorter drive than all but one team we currently play.

You could have two classes or 15 and it has nothing to do with this argument.. The problem is under the current format you change regions every year. It's bad for the sport because fans don't understand it and you lose regional rivalries.

The regional final for the district that Corbin plays in has over the past three seasons has been held in Louisville, Russell and Newport. I'm not sure the radius of those three towns, but I do know that we must be close to most everywhere in the state since this change was made to cut back on travel.:lol:
