I love wathcing Navy's offense, but I really hate that Tom Zbikowski is playing on a team this bad.

If a supposedly top level division 1 program doesn't have a kicker that is dependable enough to kick a 35-yard field goal with the game on the line, then they need to make some changes. :fire:

I will never understand why ND did not attempt the FG late in the game, although I'm glad that Weis made that odd decision.

 

Navy almost had the game stolen on that bogus pass interference call on the attempted 2 point conversion...........how can they make that call?

After watching the end of this game, I'm beginning to wonder if Coach Weis is really Coach Donaghy.

Domers, at some point, can't keep blaming their last coach- who never lost to Navy, had a nearly identical winning percentage (and was better at this point in his ND career) never had the kind of shellackings that ND has had this year, etc. Weis has been lauded for recruiting, but so far he's been a success with Ty's guys and a failure (no sugar coating it) with his own.

 

Before we hear how he 'unearthed' the talent at ND (meaning, Quinn and Samardzija) I'll go ahead and throw out some counter-arguments:

 

1) Willingham never got to coach those two beyond their sophomore seasons, so that's not really all that fair a comparison. Anyone want to trade freshman and sophomore Harry Douglas and Brian Brohm for their JR/SR counterparts? Or what about Andre Woodson? Doubt it.

 

2) Can we all not seriously say that those two were maybe a little overrated anyway? No bowl wins, only one top 25 victory (an overrated #19 Penn State) and we all know the Irish play a slightly uneven schedule with very tough games (that they lose) and very easy games (that, until this year, they win.)

 

3) So WHAT if he made Quinn and the Shark into Superhumans? He's not a QB coach or O-Coordinator anymore. He's the headcoach. He's responsible for both sides of the ball (defense hasn't looked special, has it) and the bottom line (W-L.) Brohm and Douglas have looked spectacular most of their games under Kragthorpe, but I would be quite surprised to hear any ND fan saying that this year's dissappointments don't land squarely in his lap (even though he's in his first season, not his third, and he was taking over for a regieme that got blood from turnips when it came to recruiting, etc.)

 

I'm just not sure that Weis can play the part of savior he was cast for (and auditioned for.) And that's not to say Willingham was the answer for the Irish either, although I favored giving him more time if for no other reason than it made ND look bad to let him go so soon. But this isn't about Ty, that's in the past now. At this point it's about Weis.

One main difference I see in ND's high ranked classes, and other freshmen(especially in the SEC is this:SPEED! ND doesn't have it.

Good win for the Midshipmen. Hopefully, the losses keep coming for the Fighting Irish.

I appreciate that you have at least entered this conversation with more than hatred for the Irish, however, I do disagree with you on some points.

 

With regard to Ty never having the kind of shellackings that have occurred this season, I offer: 2002 USC 44-13, NC St. 28-6, 2003 UM 38-0, USC 45-14, FSU 37-0, Cuse 38-12, 2004 Purdue 41-16, USC 41-10. That is more loses by 21+ pts. than Weis has had in his 1st 3 seasons thus far. Weis would have to lose 2 of the next 3 by 21+ to equal Ty. I'd like to think that he can keep it closer than that against all their remaining opponets, but nothing would shock me this season.

It would be naive to suggest that Ty would not have benefited from coaching BQ / JS as upperclassmen. I'm sure that under either coach both would have shown improvemet from their first two seasons. Whether they improved more so under Weis than they might of under Ty is probably up for debate. Another player who blossomed under Weis was Maurice Stovall, who was a major disappointment until Weis took over.

 

However for the sake of comparrison would it be best to wait to judge Weis's success with his own recruits until they are in the Jr / Sr seasons as well. I suppose who gets credit for the current Jr. class is up for debate as well. You cannot argue that Ty recruited more than a few of them. Weis really didn't start working full time for Notre Dame until after National Signing Day, so I would argue that he was picking from leftovers at that point.

I think that Weis had some things to learn after accepting the job about being a head coach. Personally, I believe that his 1st two recruiting classes were not balanced as far as offense / defense. I believe that the best thing Weis has done while at Note Dame may be added Corwin Brown to the staff as DC. He has paid immediate dividends with regard to the recruitment of defensive players. (None of which are actually on campus yet)

I still believe that their is an upside to Weis. He may have to fight to keep his current #1 recruiting class together, however, I really feel like he has addressed a lot of needs with who is being brought in. I watch the games and see a lot of true freshman on the field on both sides of the ball. I have been excited with what I have seen and feel that in time these guys will contribute to a winning team. Realistically a .500 season would have been great this year considering all that was lost and the lack of experience returning. ( I'll admit I never envisioned things being this bad)

 

Ty is gone, and this teams lack of success does fall on Weis, however, the lack of depth, and upperclassmen who contribute on the roster does reflect on what happened while Ty was in charge. Perhaps Ty should have gotten another year, however, the poor recruiting results gave no hope that things would turn around. Even with the poor season the Irish are having most fans at least believe that it can and will get better as talent is added to the roster. Ty is currently 10-22 at Washington. How long will he be given there, and if / when he is let go will that administration be racist also?

 

Also when questions the decision to let Ty go, lets not forget that he wasn't fired to bring in Weis. Notre Dame was led to believe that Urban Meyer was interested in the job. (I guess he was as far as leverage)

 

I may be blinded by loyalty, but I believe that Notre Dame under Weis will be able to turn things around. The current frosh and sophs are getting valuable in game experience, something that most starters this season did not have at the begining of the year.
