Where I come from (and it IS Kentucky), aint IS improper. I don't care if it is in the dictionary or not. You dont see most educated people using aint in a sentence.

 

The preposition thing? Probably because all prepositions have to have an object. At least that was the rule in my day.

 

Why don't today's students have to diagram sentences? I thought that was a great learning tool. (Sorry, didnt mean to hijack the thread!)

I was always under the impression that it was contraction of am not.

That is a tradition that has existed in European language from before Latin was

a spoken language (ca 2nd Century BC, I believe). Because prepositions required a

word that was in a different noun form than the rest of the sentence, sentences would,

in effect, look incomplete without a object of prep. When English dropped the different

noun forms, it became a positional language and thus any object of prep would have

to follow the preposition almost directly. Thus, it is improper to put the preposition

anywhere else in the sentence.

 

Or, it's just what your 3rd grade teacher said, so that makes it improper.

Ain't is a contraction for am not, and as such is technically proper English.

 

The real issue with ain't is that it is unnecessary as a contraction. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no proper usage of the word am unless it is preceded by I, correct? So any time you could say I ain't, you could also say I'm not, which is considered more proper.

In any from of writing it would be impoper. The preposition thing is wrong it must have a subject, but I have found myself putting one at the end of some of my posts when I reread them. OH well it is just us right.

It is also commonly used as a dialectical contraction of is not, are not, has not, and have not. But "ain't" is still considered sub-standard English.
