For my sake, putting abortion to the side, as you know where I stand on it (BTW, it is the scourge of this generation as slavery was for the first 60 years of the 1800's.), what is the most important issue facing this country?

 

The hot topic is immigration but if we don't get a handle on our defendence on oil, we are all going to be walking to and fro like they walk across the borders.

 

And not to mention the cost of other items. My newspaper subscription went up because of the price of oil. Well, gas and the delivery method, you could see it. BUT THAT IS NOT THE REASON. You see, those little bags that the newspaper is delivered in, is a petroleum-based product. So, the cost to supply them rises.

 

An increase cost of oil (isn't it approaching $100 a barrel) means an increase in items across the board. Meaning a lower standard of living across the board.

 

People lower their standard of living or lose their job, more unemployement and welfare from the government which means more taxes.

 

The biggest issue this country faces is changing our energy addiction to oil.

^ I said that at 65 dollar oil... now its 100.....

 

Once it approaches 4.00 next year it's gonna be interesting to see what happens when the truckers stop driving.

6. Environment

7. Debt

The list can go on and on but that's a start.

Americans deal much better with sudden threats than long term threats. I think that it has something to do with short attention spans.

That leads to, IMO, international and national decisions that are based more one how it will affect the parties position vs. the opposing party rather than what is best for America. I agree with HHSDad...all our other problems are a direct result of this one, IMO. Fix this and I am confident we could fix the others. Unfortunately, I'm just not confident we'll fix this one.

I am a little less hopeful about it than you are. The more I talk to people the less faith I have in the American public to make competent decisions.

Honestly, do you think people today are less informed and less educated than they were 200 years ago when many NEVER went to school, many couldn't read, there was not any national media to give out stories. Everything was word of mouth and you know how word of mouth stories go.
