By disregarding that half hearted (fake) signal, he completely ignored the intent of the rule. To protect the return man who is vulnerable making that catch. That complete ignorance of safety should not be tolerated at any level for any reason.

He didn't just ignore the intent, he ignored the rule. ANY signal prevents the ball from being advanced. They flat out didn't enforce the rule the way it is in the rulebook. (and the way it has always (until now) been enforced)

(and the way it has always (until now) been enforced) My problem is that somebody else is going to try this stunt or give a half hearted fair catch signal, not in the USF/UConn game, but in some game this weekend, and the defense is not going to stop this time for fear of giving up a TD (better to take the 15 yards). You know it's going to happen and a kid is liable to get hurt. That's how serious the mistake this referee made is. The more I think about this, the madder I get.

Its not only a bad call, it undermines the foundations of the game. If I was a special teams coach, I'd be coaching the difference between a "valid" and "invalid" signal this week. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the kicking team can't be penalized for hitting a guy who gave an "invalid" signal. (Althought I still doubt you'd get away with it.) If that arm only waves one way, I'd demolish the guy.

Its not his job to enforce the rules. If we suspend him, we have to suspend all the guys that pick up incomplete passes and run the other way.

When I see what has become of one of the most potent offenses in the country I can't just chalk that up to growing pains, sorry. This staff was handed the keys to a BMW and quickly turned it into a VW.

I was just playing a mind game with the defender." So at least one official knew what was going on and played along. This is the part that kills me. The kid tried to do it on purpose and the ref was obviously completely ignorant to the actual rule.
