Once the season is over, the picture on the top 4, 8, 12, whatever should be much clearer. I am still a proponent of a playoff system using the BCS rankings with more weight on the computer component (who you play, your record against them, etc). We still have 5 games left and just past the halfway point. The top 10 doesn't mean anything now compare to what it will mean at the end. A 2 team playoff like we have now will be more scrutinized this year if we keep seeing upsets as we have. The BCS could see even more outcry at the end of this season for playoff. Will the NCAA consider it? Probably not.

 

But if they are truly interested in what is best for the student athlete, .... a quick question, .... if we aren't for a playoff system, should we not eliminate it in every other NCAA sport which has it (which would be all of them), just pick the top 2 teams and let them play for a national title?

I say go to 12 and give the Top 4 seeds a bye.

I have always been a fan of inviting the top 16 teams to play in the playoff. The first two weeks or three weeks would be home games for the higher seeds and the finals would be a neutral location like the Super Bowl.

 

Furthermore, I would have teams 17 to 32 play in a "NIT" for lack of a better term and run it the same way.

 

Using the BCS to determine the top 32 teams would be fine.

Sixteen teams is the way to go. Automatic bids go to the Big East, ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12 and Pac-10. I would give one to the Mountain West and give one automatic bid to the highest-rated team (per BCS system) of the other leagues, C-USA, WAC, MAC and Sun Belt.

 

Then select the at-large teams, using the BCS rankings, and use the BCS to seed the teams 1-16. Last year's tournament would have been fun ... I posted the mythical bracket here last year.

 

Every other NCAA division has a 16-team playoff ... there is no reason Division I-A shouldn't, either.

I think that shows why 16 is too many. We don't need a third of any one conference in a playoff.

I'm with you...I think a plus one gives us a champion that almost everyone will be satisfied with and it doesn't take anything away from the greatest regular season in sports. An 8, 10, 12, or 16 team playoff, IMO, will take away from the regular season to some degree...there won't be that do or die feel to every big game because teams will know that a loss won't kill them, and that they may be able to get in with 2 losses. Put a plus one in place and everything is fixed from my view.

 

So a do or die feeling for the regular season that serves as a playoff system is wrong. But you are okay for a do or die feeling as long as it is CALLED a playoff system?

 

That is what is intriguing about the college football system compared to the others. LY, the Ohio State-Michigan game was intriguing because it was a do-or-die game. With a playoff, that game means less because both would have made the playoffs.

 

Of course, than we could have seen Florida trash two Big 10 teams. That would have been a positive to the playoff system.

The media would be going NUTS over 3 SEC teams making it in and only one team from ALL the other conferences.

 

The blitz on the media to expand to 16-teams would be intense as it would be labeled UNFAIR that one conference gets 3 teams and no other conference gets more than one.

 

It would be just as crazy as the media will be about the present system.

That's exactly the way I proprosed a playoff system on here this time last year.

 

All bowls could/would still be included, and the money would still be there. Rotate the championship game between your Big Four (Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange) and EVERYONE is happy.

So you think there would be less to play for if they changed the current system? Seems to me it would still be a challenge to make a playoff...

 

You think top notch athletes and multi-million dollar coaches are going to give up on the pursuit of perfection? I would venture to say no...

 

You think any game would be less important than it is now? again I say no, just look at Michigan, Auburn, USC, LSU, Florida... teams lose games they should/could win, it'll always be that way...

Whether it's 8, 12, or 16 teams in the playoff, it's better than what we have now. Just the mere fact that BC may have a chance to play in the national championship is enough reason to scrap the current system.:sssh: Yeah, I know it will probably never happen because of all the $ the bowls bring blah blah blah, but the current system is a sham. Remember, last year we came very close to a OSU/UM national championship game which would have been a travesty.

In football the caliber of ball a team plays can change so much from the beginning of the year to the end which makes it even more imperative to have a playoff system.

 

How many times has a team started the season injury riddled, or have a string of bad luck cost them a game, but towards the end of the year they're playing as good or better football than anyone?
