KHSAA says girls CAN NOT play!!

Featured Replies

Can anyone defend the rule as it is. What are the reasons to have such a rule in place, and who does it benefit? Just curious

Then it may be time for re-evaluation. This may result in high schools losing athletes that decide to market themselves and play AAU rather than HS ball.

And the prima donna attitude that so many, but not all, bring.

If I have a player who's good enough to legitimately play in these "Elite" exposure settings then I would think it would be part of my job to try to get that player and the rest of her team into the more prestigous tourneys and shoot-outs throughout the season.

Guess not, I will take the non response as it is a bad rule and should be changed

That's right. And, if you have a player who's good enough to legitimately play in these "Elite" camps, they can afford to skip them and not harm their chance of a scholly.

I would agree ladiesbballcoach. This was instituted as a result of a few (or many..I don't know) coaches "requiring" their kids to participate in non-school teams during the offseason, hence harming their chance to play other sports.

I personally feel that this should apply to soccer as much as any sport. Those kids go year round. What's good for the goose.....

I have had this discussion with someone that helps formulates these decisions.

When the "newer" sports was trying to get a foothold in the spring and fall, they did this to give them a chance to get going and build support instead of basketball running them over in the fall. It "leveled the playing field":D between basketball and soccer where kids could choose to play soccer in the fall and not hurt their chances in the basketball.

Question is, has soccer and volleyball now reached the point in participation that it needs to be considered to follow this guideline or release basketball from it.

I KNOW FOR A FACT that there are basketball programs HURT by VBall and soccer players wanting to forgo basketball in the winter to play club Vball and indoor soccer.

I believe there was a proposal two years ago to make players playing sports for club volleyball and soccer ineligible for HS but it was defeated.

The exact rule put into place to curb basketball and help those two sports get started was defeated and now that those two sports are hurting basketball.

You are right about Club Volleyball hurting the basketball program. Girls have to decide to either pursue their Volleyball dreams through Club ball or be a member of the Basketball team. They do not have any V-clubs that start in March in order to accomodate the 2 sport athletes. So in a way I understand the rule. However it seems to only effect Basketball in this case.

This rule imo is absurd !! After talking with two different Ky commissioners this week I realize how ridiculous it really is.

I have been asked in the last 3 weeks by well over 40 d1 coaches where my girls will be playing the September 29-30 event. I have told each of them the KHSAA rule and they are astonished by it.

The KHSAA told me this week they give the Ky girls plenty of opportunity and the high school coaches and athletic directors do not want their kids playing after the first day of school. It is not the Khsaa decision but they have to enforce it. Every single college coach i have talked to said this is hurting the Ky girls. No matter how good they are this is one less opportunity for them to be seen and for someone else to catch their attention.

To help the Ky girls have the same opportunities as the rest of the country someone needs to step up and revote on this. This should be for the girls not the coaches or athletic directors. They should be allowed to get the exposure and then give 110% to their high school coaches and teams .

Actually if someone were to file a lawsuit claiming that the "rule" is harming a player's chance to further their education via basketball that would get the attention immediately. Cite the slow pitch vs fast pitch case as evidence and it might be case closed.

InDaZone hit the nail on the head, all that needs to be done is to change the date to Oct 15th. No outside club/organization playing after the official date to start practice.

No harm w/doing this and everyone should be happy. Why would the coaches and A.D.'s be upset w/this. I would think the coaches would love to hear they have players in the exposure camps. Again, who is H.S. athletics for, "the ADULTS" involved or the "KIDS" who love to play the game.

I believe that this rule should also be changed to the official start of the season. Let the girls play AAU ball until OCT. 15th. They then can represent their high school and have the best of both worlds. The only negitive I can think of is if a girl gets injured. That night make her High School coach upset.

How can these kids not be getting enough exposure? It seems they play basketball the ENTIRE summer. How much more exposure do they need?

D1 coaches who recruit all over the country did not know KY. had this rule?

Are we the only state?

If the rule is changed then players would start being "required" to play in leagues or on certain teams directed by their high school coach. If they do not play in those leagues or on those certain teams it might be held against them. The high school coaches would also be able to dictate whether or not they let their players play on teams that they do not approve.
