This is yet another symptom of the illness within high school sports administration (Read KHSAA). The public private debate has exposed many of the illnesses already (i.e. there is no such thing as a level playing field; no school "owns" a student athlete; why aren't we enforcing the rules that already exist?) and this debate furthers that exposure in my mind. If the rationale for this type of rule is to keep some coaches from quietly "requiring" off-season participation then we are once again legislating to the masses for the sins of the few. There are rules in place governing such behavior but it appears either nobody will report it, or it is yet another of those mythological situations like "recruiting." Where did high schools come to the conclusion that they "own" the actions of athletes in off-season? Why does a volleyball player "HAVE" to be a basketball player . . .period? Last I checked, the higher percentage of high school athletes to receive athletic scholarships paled in contrast to those who play in "select" or "elite" situations off-season. This is as it should be. If my daughter averages 8 points a game in basketball but has the ability to play at an elite level in volleyball AND SHE WANTS TO DO SO, you better believe she'll get every opportunity she wants and/or needs.

In Kentucky once you start classes for that year, you cannot play in any tourney or camp. I agree that this hurts Kentucky players, both male and female. So if your school starts on Aug 7th, you cannot play in these events, but are allowed to play in these events as soon as your school is eliminated from completion in Feb or March. There are some ego centered school officials who are trying to get that set back to after school is out for the year in late spring.

So I agree this is a bad rule, you have kids wanting to play in these events during the up to 2 months before practice even begins. I know states such as Ohio gives basketball players until the last week of September to compete in these tourneys and camps.

Coaching spring and summer basketball I have received invitations to bring my team to tourneys in a few states such as Ohio, as well as bring some players to exposure camps. This only hurts these players by not being able to compete in these events.

What a popular thread this is!

I agree with several of you - club sports(soccer and volleyball) in general have hurt hs girls basketball because the club coaches demand that they play because they "might" get a scholarship. So many girls are now forced to choose when they are just freshmen and their parents are made all sorts of promises of exposure, potential scholarships, etc. I agree with Luantic!!!

I also disagree that girls basketball doesn't have as many scholarships to offer- that is simply not true. Perhaps there is more competition for those scholarships but there are plenty out there for someone who has the ability to play at several levels- NCAA D1, D2 and NAIA D1. Soccer may play more athletes but most of those players are not on full scholarships and they have to share.

As for the exposre events it is a shame that KY players miss out and the rules should be changed to Oct 15- although, there are plenty of events in the spring and summer, what happens in the fall is the school finds out a player who they offered a scholarship is committing to another school and now they are looking to replace that player. These September events give them an additional opprtunity so that they can be seen and sign early in November. More and more players are committing extremely early- sometimes in their sophomore year - which is almost crazy but the competiton for the schools is all about who can get you first.

It is sad that the KHSAA views that our talent level is not worthwhile enough!

Well I see now that the rule has changed- that is great! Good Luck to everyone who is getting to go!!!

Does anyone have a report of a player who attended one of the "showcases"? I'd be interested to hear how it went and how the exposure was. (number of coaches, big name schools, etc)

Adidas Midwest Explosion-Indianapolis. (The player list had 3 gals from No Ky on it.) Individual event, not a team event. One day, time only kept, no score kept, fouls called but not counted. Appx 160 players, appx 35-40 colleges represented. These come to mind right now since I was familiar with them immediately: NKU, Thomas More, Bellarmine, Evansville, Hanover. I know a couple of DI's were there from Indiana, but I can't remember if it was Purdue & Indiana or someone else. They were kept separate in the facilities for seating of course since they could not talk with the players. LOTS of basketball played. 3 games for each player, 21 min halves, 7 min intervals for subs. My daughter's team had 7 players. By the 3rd game, not a whole lot of jumpshots were falling for anyone present! Each team had an hour in between games. Very well run. Since we had not had an opportunity to do this before, it was a surprise to find that the college scouts from a lot of colleges were actually there. No overpromise and under deliver for this event.

There were 15-18 KY players in Columbus for the All Ohio NIKE Jamboree. There were a lot of colleges in attendance…3/4 of which were D1 (Ohio State, Duke, UNC, Michigan…etc) to name a few.

I believe this one was a team event, wasn't it? I know of one KY based AAU team that was going to go...KY Extreme? Any others?

I'm prety sure X'treme was the only KY team in the tourney.

I believe the X'treme was the only Ky team as well , but I agree with INDAZONE, there were probably 15-18 Ky girls at the tournament!! thanks KHSAA!!

On the main court ,at one time ,we counted about 45-50 college scouts, with several scouts being at the other 3 courts. Since arriving back home on Sunday night I have spoken with several of the coaches who knew we were going to be there and a couple different schools I haven't spoken to before. I can say this event was very positive for ALL of the Ky girls after speaking with those coaches. Good luck to all the Bluegrass girls !!

I am sure their were several Ky girls who did not get to go this yr. due to the time constraints, but I applaud the parents and the coaches (high school and aau ,exposure) that made the sacrifice to get the girls noticed. I know there has been many people trying to get the rule changed for a long time. Next yr. hopefully there will be a couple hundred Ky girls in different events in September, and you will have the advantage of knowing your allowed to play so after nationals or your last event you can just keep on charging ahead !!

Does anyone know the rule about team play once school is in session? I thought players could not play in AAU type tournaments/games once school officially starts. Does the new ruling negate this? Thanks.

Hi 1734....look back in this thread a little bit. The re-interpretation for the bylaw is there.
