September 4, 200719 yr I agree on the bolded point. Weis should not really feel the ultimate heat until next season until the kids he recruited are relied upon for the bulk of the work. "Reloading" is fine at major universities if the talent is there to reload with. For example, Miami. They have been brutal as of late, but the kids are still in the program, they just had sub-par coaching - their program is ready to reload instantly (same with MIchigan). Notre Dame had two really, really poor classes the last two seasons under Ty. Yes, if ND struggles this year and next, then Weis will be under the gun big time when Clausen is a junior...it will be his team, his players and the natives will be restless. He'll make it through five years, IMO, regardless...after that, if things aren't going the way people expected, then year six could be make or break for Weis. Obviously, that's looking pretty far ahead, but it doesn't look like the Irish will be real good this year...and you have to wonder if they'll make the leap next year to be as good as the fans there want, so year 5 is big, IMO...depending on what he does there will determine whether year 6 is a "save my job" season. Personally, I think Weis will get it right.
September 4, 200719 yr According to espn's bottom line Clausen has been named the starter for the Penn St. game.
September 4, 200719 yr I think Notre Dame could be better than people expect by season's end...the problem is, they're probably going to get buried by their schedule and may not give them a chance to gain any confidence. I think they have some good young talent that should get much better with experience. The schedule may be too much though...
September 4, 200719 yr I don't see ND winning more than 4 games this season. Michigan will do much better, but that loss will haunt them the rest of the season. Just this season?
September 4, 200719 yr Whoevers players they are they sure are not acting like they want to play football right now. They looked like they wanted to play powder puff. The Irish faithful will not put up with this for to much longer. They want a coach that is going to win all the time, rebuilding is not allowed only reloading. He cant reload yet, when he is still trying to get it loaded for the first time. He was not in position at all to start reloading when he got here, it was a rebuilding job. I guess people just forgot that since he was able to come in here right away and do good with the players that were left to him. But now all those players are gone, and he is playing with guys who are upperclassman that Ty brought in that was not that good of a recruiting class. He also lost his WHOLE offense and pretty much whole offense from last year. Yeah you see teams lose alot on one side of the ball sometime, but not on both sides of the ball in the same year. Everyone knew going into this year that it was going to be a REALLY TOUGH year..Charlie Weis since he has been here has brought in some of the top recruits in the country, and next year is the year that is going to really tell how he is doing. Because next year it will pretty much be all the players he brought in. So if this goes on next year, then Charlie will be starting to get into some trouble...
September 4, 200719 yr Very simple. Just WIN.... ND and UM are out of National Championship picture (even if they were in it to begin with...) and the season goes on. To make everyone happy, JUST WIN..... I see UM loosing a couple more games. I see ND winning about 5 games...... I think I'll side with the W's and take UM.....
September 4, 200719 yr Notre Dame is in worse shape. MI has talent and will win a lot of games this year. ND won't.
September 4, 200719 yr While Michigan losing to a 1-AA squad (albeit a very good one) is a worse loss than ND getting beat by a pretty good georgia Tech team, UM is still in a lot better shape going forward this year. ND is a mess rirght now and will be lucky to get to .500 whereas Michigan is still a very good football team that just had a one week meltdown. Wisconsin is probably now the frontrunner, but Michigan is still going to be right there in the mix for the Big 10, along with OSU and PSU.
September 4, 200719 yr Obviously if you are just looking at this season than Notre Dame is in a much worse situation than Michigan. However, I still believe that Weis will bring things back around in South Bend. Notre Dame's biggest problem right now is that Ty didn't find many quality recruits out on the golf course. His last two classes were ranked #32 and #40 by Rivals. Weis is just 1 game into his 3rd season, and as a fan I don't feel that that is enough time to judge his performance as Notre Dame's head coach. The current Sophmore class was ranked #8 by Rivals, however, outside of OL Sam Young, I can't really think of anybody who received a lot of playing time last season. Maybe George West at WR towards the end of the season. 5-star RB James Aldridge missed over half the season with an injury, and never really was 100% plus he was behind Darius Walker. Darrin Walls and Rasheon McNeil were highly rated CB's who were behind Seniors last season, but should step up their play as the season goes on and they gain experience. The current Freshman class was also ranked #8 by Rivals. I don't think you can really judge them by one game, but if nothing else, Jimmy Clausen, Armando Allen, Golden Tate, Robert Hughes, and Duval Kamara all saw action offensively. The defensive freshman didn't seem to get as much action, however, most of Notre Dame's Seniors are on D, so I guess that can be expected. Personally, as bad as the D was last year, I would rather just let the Freshman take their lumps if they are going to be terrible anyways. Unfortunately 5-star CB Gary Gray will miss the entire season due to injury. The following stat is meaningless until NSD, but currently Notre Dame has the #1 recruiting class according to Rivals. What I like about this class is that 12 of the 19 commits are on defense. It is too early to tell what type of impact the hiring of Corwin Brown as the DC will have on the field, but it has already paid dividends from a recruiting standpoint. This year will be disappointing, but any rational Irish fan could have predicted this season just by looking at the depth chart. However, with the types of players that Weis has brought in the last couple of years and those commited to arrive on campus next season, I see no reason why Notre Dame should be down for long.
September 4, 200719 yr Michigan is in a lot better shape than Notre Dame. Michigan has the talent to come back and win around 9,10 11 games. While Notre Dame doesn't, and with the talent they have they could win around 4,5 or 6 games. Tough loss for Michigan but they can and will bounce back. Notre Dame is in for a long, long ride this season.
September 4, 200719 yr I think Michigan is in a worse spot.... I don't think many are expecting ND to be worth a darn this year, but UM was ranked #5 and went down to a 1-AA foe....
September 5, 200719 yr I look for them to have about the same season as last year. They will have a better season than many may think.
