September 4, 200719 yr WHat team looks to be in worse shape after the first week? Michigan - after a upset loss to App. State. That has sparked the lynch mob to come calling for the head coaches job. Will this lead to a year long distraction? Notre Dame- after suffering one of the worse losses in the last 25 years. Not having a starting QB. A coach that is labeled an offensive master mind- but they had no sign of offense on Saturday. I think Notre Dame is in worse shape than Michigan. I don't think ND has the talent to win more than 4 games this season. WHat are your thoughts on these two storied college Programs?
September 4, 200719 yr It depends on how you are looking at the question. Which is a better team this season??? It is easily Michigan - but if you look at their recruiting, it has dropped off as of late and they had a much more devastating loss. UM's future is looking bright because Carr is not going to be there. With the exception of Lou Holtz (which is crazy, but I honestly believe he knows ND was not going to be good), Notre Dame's team is really not that much of a suprise.
September 4, 200719 yr Michigan will rebound and definitely have a winning season and a bowl bid. As for Notre Dame and beleive me I am a huge ND fan I was in shock in what I saw on Saturday and a couple of times thought I was going to get sick. They had a huge wake up call and I hope they change things around or they will definitely have a losing season. I think they should have started Clausen myself however, I am not the coach. I wish them well and hope I can handle this season. JD
September 4, 200719 yr Both are in bad shape really. ND should be pretty good right now for this is the start of Coach Weiss's 3rd year so his recruited players should be doing good. But it seems they have gotten worse as the time has went on. If they are not any better next year Weiss might be looking for another NFL team to assistant coach. For Michigan, enough said just losing to App. State.

For Michigan, enough said just losing to App. State. Again, that is not right. There are many exceptions to the rule, but Weis has brought in two recruiting classes. 3/5 of those he brought in last season (as is the case with every other university) were redshirted. Same goes for the kids he brought in this season. Essentially the team is made up redshirt Freshman that he recruited, and Willingham's last 3 recruiting classes (with a few true Freshman and Sophmores sprinkled in).
September 4, 200719 yr Whoevers players they are they sure are not acting like they want to play football right now. They looked like they wanted to play powder puff. The Irish faithful will not put up with this for to much longer. They want a coach that is going to win all the time, rebuilding is not allowed only reloading.
September 4, 200719 yr It has to be ND. Very horrible lose for Michigan but they have the talent to bounce back. On the other hand I dont think ND has the talent nor the schedule to bounce back from this....

Weis should not really feel the ultimate heat until next season until the kids he recruited are relied upon for the bulk of the work. "Reloading" is fine at major universities if the talent is there to reload with. For example, Miami. They have been brutal as of late, but the kids are still in the program, they just had sub-par coaching - their program is ready to reload instantly (same with MIchigan). Notre Dame had two really, really poor classes the last two seasons under Ty.
September 4, 200719 yr It can't get much worse for Michigan. Notre Dame on the the other hand may be in for a very, very long season.
September 4, 200719 yr Author It's not the end of the world for Michigan. They got beat by a team that has some talent. A coaching staff that has great football knowledge. That runs a spread offense and gets the ball to play makers. Michigan moe than likely was over looking App. State and when they decided to play it was to late because State believed they where going to win. No ND on the other hand was never a threat to Ga.-tech. Their offense was sicking.

I am sorry, but I am not subscribing to that line of thinking. UM got beat by a MUCH inferior team, there is no debating that. Even if they were overlooking them (which they were), they should have rolled by 3 or 4 TDs. I highly doubt there is more than 4 or 5 kids on the entire Appalachin State roster recruited by more than mid-major D-1 schools. Michigan had them outmanned at every single position except one, coaching. There is no way to rationalize a loss to a team not even in the same division. NC State, which was brutal last season beat App. State by a couple of TDs.
September 4, 200719 yr I don't see ND winning more than 4 games this season. Michigan will do much better, but that loss will haunt them the rest of the season.
September 4, 200719 yr Would you rather be Carr or Weis right now?No question. Weis. I would rather be any other college football coach in America than Carr right now.
