Boyle County quaterback situation?

Featured Replies

Bryce really did not look that bad at BG. Compared to the Madison Central scrimmage he seemed to get the message and he did one thing against BG that he didn't do against Madison Central and that was move the ball effectively. While I do like Mason and Smith's abilities at QB with Perry, Auhmiller, and Williams at wr's, I'd like to see what Bryce can do the first 3 games before I switch his position. Had Boyle decided to move Bryce last year instead of Grant......never mind.

If Perry can't beat Danville, then maybe the QB situation should be revisited. Mason had two good passes for about 80 yards(6-10-110 overall), but he also threw the int that sealed the BG game and he took a 20 yard sack when he shouldn't have as well. Perry did neither of those when he was in the game. He had 1 botched handoff fumble returned for a 92 yard td and hit the bench after that 1 glaring mistake thru 3+ quarters, Mason had those 2 glaring mistakes in less than a full quarter. I like BC's chances with Perry at this point.

Of course, they play Henry Clay which could possibly spell doom for Perry's QB career and I think to pull Perry and move him to wr would be premature at this point.

I think Smith's last name might be hurting him more than anything. I believe he is related to Coach Smith, and Phillip Mason is son of Coach Mason. Even though Smith is probably a better QB, we all know who is the number 2 QB.

Jacob Smith is not related to Chuck Smith. He is the son of the former middle school head coach and former long time assistant, Keith Smith. Keith was a Boyle football palyer and wrestler in the mid 80s.

Back to the quarterback situation. I thought Grant Tamme looked to be a good quarterback prospect, but was moved to wide receiver in favor of Bryce Perry last year. Now, it seems the Rebel nation wants a change of quarterback other than Bryce Perry.

Can anyone on the inside provide some insight here?

In discussions with members of the Boyle staff there were questions about Tamme's toughness. That's suprising, seeing him on the basketball floor, but that's what I was told.

My insight is no change wanted here, Maybe a few people but not the "Rebel Nation"

I havent heard of one person that actually wants Perry pulled. The question was asked because Mason came into the BG game in relief. I think that experiment quickly ended with those two INTs that he threw right to BG defenders. Plus, his one good comp. to Williams was badly underthrown. Bryce had a good game, and despite that hand-off he looked like he was in control. He moved the offense up and down the field, but he had some mental mistakes as well. I am not expecting Jeff Duggins, Bart Johnson, or Brandon Smith to trot out onto the field, so i was extremely pleased with his work (especially the 1st half). Its way too early to be doing these posts, but the coaches i guess made the question relevent by putting Mason in there.

Oh, and what he said too, lay off the rebel fans. No one is expecting Papa Johns every year.

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm harping on Pardue (but I know it will :D ), this was something I thought served Chuck Smith well in 2002.

When "the streak" was alive (47 games), most people said that if Chuck put Jacob Tamme at QB (he had been a backup in the prior year) then the streak would be more likely to keep going but the goal of winning state might be limited because Brandon Smith was the best long range option. Chuck put Brandon (a Soph) in and kept him there. The offense struggled early and the streak ended vs. Danville but Brandon stayed in there. By the time the Rebs hit the playoffs they were at their best and rode a seasoned Sophomore with confidence to the title. Sometimes it pays to stick with the guy early because it makes you a better team come playoff time.

While I was there, I also did not see some of the outstanding Division I type athletes that Chuck Smith had at Boyle County (no Leffews, no Tammes etc.). Say what you want, but maybe Chuck's success was a combination of hard work, preparation, good coaching and maybe most importantly an unusual influx of some Division I caliber athletes that Coach Pardue is not blessed with.

How many times does this have to be debunked?

Besides Tamme (and remember UK pulled their offer for a time) what other players did Chuck Smith have that were D1 skilled athletes?

Chuck Smith is arguably the greatest KY high school football coach ever considering what he achieved but the most impressive part is he did it without D1 skilled athletes. Saying he had a lot of D1 skilled talent in nothing more than a defense mechanism for other public high school coaches that don't have their act together.

If most public high schools would spend more time examining the "Chuck Smith way" and less time complaining, public school football in KY would explode.

The word "skilled" athlete was not mentioned in my comment. Some Boyle County Division I type athletes in the Chuck Smith era, who were not "skilled" athletes include Bobby Leffew, Travis Leffew, and Brodie Overstreet. All three were big, strong, and athletic players who played at the Division I level. My point was that I do not see these type players on the current Boyle County squad.

This type of talent comes to a school like Boyle County in maybe twenty year cycles and must be developed and Chuck did a fantastic job of developing it. But Coach Pardue doesn't seem to have that type of talent to develop.

I know skilled wasn't in your comment but in my opinion your comment is misleading. All the guys you mentioned were studs but I don't think those kind of players can have near the impact on a game that a skilled D1 athlete can have.

Also, imagine if Chuck would have coached at Henry Clay, they would have been Super Bowl champs. LOL

I totally agree with you on this one. I cant even count how many high school coaches asked me about Chuck Smith and some of the drills he used to do and how he kept building and building.

Another thing about the Boyle teams during the "championship" run was that those teams were fundamentally sound in All areas. To see the Boyle teams during those years running out onto the field, you might not be that impressed at first, they weren't that big overall and they weren't explosively fast overall. But, once the games began, the machine was set in motion. They didn't miss tackles. They didn't blow blocking assignments. They rarely turned the ball over. They rarely were out of position defensively. etc. etc.

No question what Chuck Smith accomplished is short of amazing. But I do believe he caught "lightning in a bottle". Nobody knew his name nor cared who he was his first 15 years as a head coach, because he won nothing. I sat in the stands and watched Danville beat his Boyle Co. team 60-7 in the last regular season game of 1998. Of course by the end of 1999 his legend was begininng to grow, and in spite of what you may think, a tremendous run of high school talent mixed with 5-6 division 1 calibar players over that time span created a dynasty. It was a perfect storm, so to speak.

Those who saw the game last week vs. BG will say stick with Perry and I totally agree. Those who say go with Mason did not make the trip to BG to watch the game.

I can remember sitting with a friend of mine during Boyle County's spectacular run and always saying they reminded me of the New England Patriots with their machine-like precision, their ability to force a turnover at the right time, the ability to make the game breaking play when they needed it. There was definitely a swagger to a Smith coached team compared to a Pardue coached team. In time these Pardue teams will have their own swagger. It did take Chuck 6-7 years to develop Boyle County into the powerhouse they became. Even his success didn't happen overnight.
