Belfry 21 Corbin 0

Featured Replies

I agree 100%. Hey Belfry is a great football team, i just feel our line play made them look alot better becasue we couldn't establish a running game.

Everyone will have trouble running on Belfry...looking forward to Pikeville vs. Belfry and JC vs. Belfry.

Now for Corbin,

THE GOOD:

- Cashen did not disappoint. He appeared to be like a second head coach out on the field, play after play he amde the right decision and did everything he could to move the Hounds down the field against an exceptional defense. When Belfry would send extra pressure he was brilliant at not only avoiding the sack, but finding a receiver.

- Sanders was an absolute manchild... he may not be very big in the look aspects, but the kid plays like he is 6'4 240. On offense he was a viable option as a receiver and on numerous times made huge blocks (he absolutely crushed Ivan Lee who is a monster), defensively he was everywhere and he amde sure when he hit you that you didn't just get arm tackled. This kid will wreak havoc on 2A teams.

-Pass blocking was solid. Keep in mind that for the most part Belfry was only sending three men, but even when they would pinch an end or send either May or Dotson, the Hounds would pick it up and give Cashen all day to oversee the field.

-The Hounds will flat hit you.. Belfry's poor Sophomore HB/S Thomas Vaney got introduced to Varsity football the hard way.

THE BAD:

- Corbin got absolutely wore out up front.. Belfry appeared bigger, stronger, and quicker.

- Though the Hounds would lay a hit, the Pirates broke a ton of tackles from Corbin players not locking up.

- Corbin may return 9 starters on both sides of the ball, but they amde some mental errors that would make you think they were only returning 3 or 4 starters. Numerous penalties inluding a substitution infraction on 4th and 4 to give Belfry a first down. The Hounds also ahd the ball fairly deep in Pirate territory then lost about 30 yards on a botched shotgun snap.

THE UGLY:

-Not alot fo Hound faithful at the game, that took me back a bit.

-Corbin never gave up, but you could tell their spirit was broke by their lack of emotion on the field in the second half. It was as if they were frustrated by the Pirate's methodical marches down field 3 yards at a time.

OVERALL:

Corbin's offense passed well enough that the shutout doesn't indicate how good they really are. Corbin has some small tweaking left to do, but they still have everything they need to compete for a 2A title.I do question the Corbin coaches committment to continue to try to find the running game, even late in the 4th quarter. Corbin won't have to see many Front 7's as talented as Belfry... and once they eliminate the emntal errors this team will be solid.SIDENOTE:

I wanna give some props to #2 for the Hounds. The best show of sportsmanship all night came when #2 helped a Belfry player who was cramping up until the coaches came.

I wondered why Corbin tried to run the ball when they had it down inside the 15 yd line in the 1st half after moving the ball down the field via the pass which ended up with a turnover on the fumble. They also tried to run on 4th and 2 around midfield in the 4th qtr when they were down 14-0 only to come up short. Belfry was just whipping them up front IMO to try and run it during these crucial plays.

Stats per this morning's Williamson Daily News (take them for what they are worth, suually the WDN stats aren't accurate)

Corbin

Passing 11-27 107 yards, 1 INT

Rushing 43 yards

150 Total Yards (I think Corbin has more passing yards than what they are given, that or they were deducted passing yards ala NFL for that long loss in the first half on the botched snap)

Belfry

May 16 carries, 129 yards 2TD

Total yards 282 (I also question this... Elkins threw for about 75 yards.. May ran for 129... that alone is over 200 yards, Hickman ahd a 50 yard run and Lee a 22 yard TD... I know Belfry gained more than 15 yards with their other carries.

They get the stats from Belfry, so it should be accurate, plus that is about what WYMT had from my understaning.

This score doesn't really suprise me. I thought Belfry's speed on defense would give Corbin fits.

Did Corbin ever try to establish the running game with the big FB Campbell? That is the only way I could see them moving the ball against Belfry.

They tried.... but it was to no evail, by my stats I just took watching the replay:

Campbell: 5 carries, 3 yards, 2 Fumbles (1 recovered, 1 lost)

Cashen: 5 carries, -31 yards, 1 Fumble (recovered)

Fritz: 5 carries, 8 yards

Watkins: 2 carries, 0 yards

Sanders: 1 carry, 2 yards

18 carries, -18 yards

For Belfry:

May: 21 carries, 145 yards 2 TD

Lee: 9 carries, 68 yards, 1 TD

Hickman: 5 carries, 64 yards, 1 Fumble (lost)

Lovern: 7 carries, 27 yards

Varney: 6 carries, 19 yards

Elkins: 3 carries, -4 yards, 2 Fumbles ( 2 lost)

51 carries, 319 yards

PASSING

Corbin/Cashen: 16-26, 194 yards, 1 INT

Belfry/Elkins: 5-8, 83 yards

RECEIVING

Corbin: Madon 8-102 yards, Wagers 2- 20 yards, Watkins 2- 26 yards, Sanders 1-19 yards, Campbell 1- 14 yards, Fritz 2- 13 yards

Belfry: May 1-38 yards, Lovern 2- 13 yards, Varney 1- 29 yards, Preston 1-3 yards

TOTAL OFFENSE

Corbin: 176 yards, 2 Turnovers, 7 First Downs

Belfry: 402 yards, 2 Turnovers, 17 First Downs

PENALTIES

Corbin: 6/ 57 yards

Belfry: 5/ 29 yards

Based on the team Corbin had last year and what they brought back, I expected this to be a closer game. Belfry is Belfry and anyone that has been there knows how tough it is to win there. But I expect Corbin is a little bit disappointed. I still expect both of these teams to make noise in the playoffs.

Nice Stats, very complete and matched what Corbin Radio had.

Couldn't be more pleased with the Pirates! The o-line played very good against a quality opponent. If they play at a high level, Belfry's lack of breakaway speed may not matter.

Elkins looked MUCH improved over last season. I expect big things out of that kid after last night.

I really like May running from the tailback position. May, Lee, and Dotson at FB looked very good to me, but I don't think Dotson carried the ball a single time. For that formation to be as good as it can, Dotson has to be productive carrying the ball on dive plays. I think he will be fine.

The other tailbacks looked good as well. #7 and #9 are small in stature but played solid football, especially considering they are only Sophs.

Belfry's front seven was excellent.

Did I mention Elkins look ok?

I also want to comment on the crowds for this game.

There was a lot of people in the stands on the Belfry side, but it was stangely subdued. A lot of sadness tonight among the Belfry faithful surely contributed to that. I think it was the quietest I have ever seen a Belfry crowd during a game, much less a big win.

Additionally, I was surprised that Corbin didn't bring more fans to this game. It was thin on that side of the field and that was a big shock for me. I'm sure the drive, the heat and the fact that the game was on live on WYMT played a big part in that.

The Corbin faithful are still there . . . it was just way too far (3 and one-half hour drive at best.) and too late (9:35 p.m. kick-off) and too hot (still 85+ degrees at kick-off) to travel when WYMT was airing it live. The high school was showing it on their big screen in the auditorium for any of the community that wanted to come together. I am sure their were many faithful cheering from the comfort of the air conditioned auditorium. Corbin seems to be starting slow again, but don't count us out just yet. Belfry was an excellent team, and for whatever reason Coach Jewell seems to want to start each year off (first few games) with teams of this caliber. While some may not agree with this it seems to pay dividends at the end of the season when it really counts. I hope the younger players keep their heads up. They have the potential to shine this year! GO HOUNDS!

I'd say that pretty much explains that.

I was there. I thought our side of the stands were pretty much full, sure there were empty seats here and there - as there were on the home side. We also had several on the fences in the end zones. I was pleased with the turnout considering the 3 hour drive and the lack of hotel rooms. The game actually kicked off around 10:15 - 10:25, which most of us thought would be the case. This is something that should be considered by teams traveling as far or further as Corbin, after picking my son up at the high school I think I got in bed sometime around 5:45 AM.

Befry looked very, very good in this one especially on defense.

I was impressed with all of the different things the Corbin QB did.

I'm working on a game report for this one but many names are not included because I could not find rosters for wither team nor could my two scouts.

The program/insert from the local paper did not include them for some reason.

NCF, if you give me the Belfry number I can give you the name... I also know most of the Corbin skill players last names as well

I can give you the Corbin Players names by number as well

Cool. I will post the article and if you want sned me the names I need to include.

I hope to get a preview that has them in it but so far that has not happened.
