I'm the Director of IT at a place with 7 locations and I have over 5 years of experience in the IT field and I will say with 100% confidence that you need the Linksys Wireless G router from Wal Mart - should be around $50-60. Make sure you do NOT get the one with SpeedBoost. There are a couple of others that are cheaper (D-Link, for example), but they are more difficult to use and much more prone for problems. Also, the Linksys will offer you the most effective wireless signal. Hope this helps. Also, not trying to toot my own horn, just wanted you to be confident that I know what I'm talking about.

I would probably use 128-bit WEP encryption (something that your neighbors can't guess) and also make sure you change the username and password to login from the default password of blank with no username. If you leave it default, your neighbors can simply login to your router and do as they wish with it - including locking you out of your own router and/or get free Internet.

 

One note, using encryption will slightly reduce your wireless signal strength, but is a must if you live near other houses.

I haven't actually used it with a PS3, but other games that I"ve used with these particular routers just do everything automatically. The router assigns a DHCP (automatic, so that you don't have to do anything) address to the game console and you're all set.

There is no more Linksys, they were purchased by Cisco some time ago, and Cisco has killed the Linksys name.

 

I'm sure you can still get some Linksys stuff, but since it seems like everyone on here has one, just giving you a heads up.

I'm in the market for a wireless router. I'm currently staying at a house with Zoomtown, and will need a router to use my laptop. Any suggestions?

 

 

I assume the house your staying in doesn't have the wireless router from Cincinnati Bell, and you have a wireless card for you laptop? If so, then you can pick up the wireless router from Cincinnati Bell for $50. That's what we did when we upgraded to wireless, and we haven't had any issues at all. For security, if you're running Windows XP, you can also use WPA instead of the WEP encryption.

Yes, this has worked wonderfully for us!!! We first purchased Netscape (I believe that is what it was) and it was awful. I think we got it for $50 at Staples. We have had it for about two months and no problems. My parents have this as well. No problems for them either...they have had theirs for years! Good luck!

If you get a wireless router and want to use the wireless internet you will need one if your computer doesnt already have one built into it. My laptop came with wireless already built into it so I didnt need one.

 

I have zoomtown and we have a netgear wireless router and it works just fine. Prolly cheaper than linksys/cisco.

The laptop I got had a wireless card built in, so pretty much after I turned my new laptop on, I just had to coordinate signal with router info and I was off and running.
