The challenge with using wins and ERA to determine how well a pitcher pitches is that they're dependent upon others to help them out. Look at how well Clemens pitched a few years ago but didn't win a lot of games due to lack of offense. If the offense scored more runs would that somehow have made him a better pitcher?

 

ERA is dependent upon the quality of your D. Take tonight's game for example. While Bronson had zero earned runs, he also had Freel making plays that cut down innings and runs , thus, not hurting his ERA. A different outfielder and maybe BA has earned runs in the ledger.

 

Its definitely much harder to evaluate pitchers than hitters.

If Pete doesn't get the job after the season. Which I don't think he will. I would like to see him get a chance somewhere else. I think he might have what it takes. I like a lot of the things he does.

 

 

I was against it at first wanting to bring in a big name, but I like how he is doing things. Like they said he has won a lot of minor league games, he could be the sleeper the Reds have been waiting for.

It will be interesting to see how the managerial process progresses and plays out. I think ol' Pete may make it more difficult on Big Bob who probably already has his mind made up.

Like the guys on Baseball Tonight said, he has been out of the box, and he will do what he thinks is right, not what is the popular decision, like keeping Stanton in to face a right hander and things like that, taking Dunn out of the game in the ends of games, things Jerry Narron would not ever do.

It worked out nicely tonight. It's hard to imagine taking out the guy that is most likely to be able to end the game with one swing.

We all know he can hit the ball a mile, but his lack of production with runners in scoring position with his propensity to K makes him less likely to get the game winner. He just doesn't seem to hit well when the pressure is on...maybe his mental approach changes or his heartrate goes up and causes him to lose focus...whatever it is, he just doesn't seem to be the guy to get the big hit in the clutch.

Earlier Thom was talking about this and how Dunn didn't like it either. Dunner met with Pete and Pete heard Dunn out. That night's game, Dunn came out late in the game for defensive purposes.

 

Love it. Dunn doesn't like it, get out and take extra flyballs or groundballs and make yourself not a defensive liability.

Too few and far between for his big hits. A small market team like the Reds needs more production from him to justify the money it will take to keep him, IMO...

Well then he has changed his MO from his typical performance...of course guys do tend to play a little better in what amounts to a contract season...
