I'd like to hear the arguments on both sides of making public the records for conceal and carry permits. As a parent of small children, I don't think the criminal histories of sex offenders should be kept from public view. There are some cases where the public good trumps the interests of individuals, IMO.

He had a conceal carry? Where did you read that? Point of the tread is that conceal carry permit holders names, ages and home counties were published in the paper. You have to have a background check and go through a training course to receive a conceal carry permit, hardly something they just give to idiots. If fact, can you name anyone charged with a gun crime that possessed a conceal carry permit?

I really don’t know what the statistics are here, but those who obtain concealed carry permits are the best of the best in terms of knowledge, training and a lawful history. They are screened more closely than any other gun owners. The vast, vast majority of them remain lawful citizens. The only reason you should know who they are, would be so you’d know which neighbor to call first to save you butt when some crack head breaks into your house in the middle of the night and you don’t have time to wait for the police to get there.

 

The only way you should know which neighbor is legally packing would be if he/she chose to tell you.

This was a politically motivated move by the newspaper, and makes as much sense as revealing how 2,700 people voted in the last election or some other private information. It was wrong.

What would you do with this knowledge?

 

And a question for those who support concealed carry, what is the purpose of carrying a concealed weapon? I don't mean "protection", I mean concealed. I know that I sometimes carry a handgun when I take a hike along some isolated backroads and I admit it is an awkward feeling to have a gun and holster strapped on over a jogging suit. For that reason I am considering a ccp. Not for the element of surprise or whatever, just to keep from looking like such a dork when I feel it necessary to have a little extra protection.

Why should I not have a right to know how you vote every election, or how much you pay in taxes every year, or if you've ever had an abortion, or any number of other bits of private information you have accumulated while going about things in a "legal" manner? How about your Socisl Security number or your cheking account balance or how much cash you have stashed in your home for a rainy day?

 

If you're doing things within the law, you should be entitled to some privacy.

 

Now, if you get booked for a DUI, or child molestation, or other illegal act, I agree with you, all privacy goes out the window and we have a right to know.
